Poll question: Does this sound weak: I will fight to defend my country not enrich a few
and cite Smedley Butler's 'War Is a Racket.'

Just because someone is screaming for war doesn't mean we are threatened. It might just mean the screamer sees a chance to use our military for a hostile takeover of another country's assets.

If we are serious about reducing terrorism, we have to stop allowing our foreign policy and military to enrich a few even when their goals frustrate the democratic aspirations of other people.

No one should profit from the blood our soldiers spill or the blood they spill of others.

Both are happening in Iraq and will happen with the Bushies attack Iran.

This would clearly put the GOP on the defensive, especially if you list who has profited from the current war, and how little a threat Iraq posed.

1. I heard Kennedy wanted out of Viet Nam by 1965. What happened to him?
He got a bullet in the head.

2. Other, but I would stay with "I will fight to defend my country"
and leave it at that.

It's hard to argue with and it covers the "not to enrich a few" thing.

5. Yes, you have. They're not fighting to defend our country.
I guess I was looking at it more as a personal statement than a political thing. When we politicize it, it turns off some people. Keeping it simple makes it hard to disagree with (for anybody) and might make some people think about what we're really doing with our military.

6. This is where Dems screw up big time--without conflict, there is no story
without a story, no one pays attention.

The GOP did this by creating a straw man enemy--the tax and spend liberal.

They aren't just for things, but are for them in contrast to what they say others want.

This is so effective, they keep talking like the underdog even though they control all three branches of government and most of the media.

Democrats talk like they are in beauty pageant, and they'll win if they just smile and never say anything that would offend anyone anywhere.

We have a real opponent we can point to without distortion and without resorting to personal attacks.

When our goals and idea about how to acheive them overlap the right, fine. Work with them.

But the rest of the time, we shouldn't be worried about hurting their feelings or scaring away voters by differentiating ourselves from them.
