DR. Rice: "With press freedom comes a certain responsibility!"

"Well, let me first say that this has been a difficult period. We are strong proponents of the freedom of the press. It is one of the most fundamental freedoms of democratic development. We also believe that with press freedom comes a certain responsibility."

http://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/WO0602/S00132.htm

She is talking about the Danish cartoons. Evidently she thought the Danish paper irresponsible for publishing those castoons. I expect that the administration would not hesitate to designate certain factions of our press as 'irresponsible' presently. Maybe even to suggest or order them to be shut down. Mustn't be irresponsible, you know.

1. o realllly?
HI! my second post! My very first post was how any Progressive who said "freedom of the press comes with responasability" was sounding to me like a Rebublican! the fundies when offended by 'piss christ' are the first to whine this mantra. So now the left does it to defend terrorists and riots? shameful. I caught her speech, again it is political two-facedness and hypocracy at it's worse! She specifically mentioned Syria and Iran BY NAME in her speech as "inciting the arab street" but failed to mention other countries that are Bushs' buttbuddies! Syria and IRAN? sure, but what about Jordan? They attacked the embassey there! what about Turkey? a chritian preist was murdered there for this. What about Afghanistan? they tried to attack a US base!(4 dead) Saudi Arabia (our bestest buddies) have now cut off all trade contracts with Denmark. And the less said about the occupied territories the better! And finnally iraq, they are sabre rattling against all of Europe for the actions of one small paper. But iM sure this is'nt about Islam or Muslim culture in general, its about a "few" extremeists who have highjacked it......right?:eyes:

4. What's the difference between an art gallery and

the WaPo or NYT? C'mon, that's a piss (pun intended) poor comparison. An art gallery, and a major, and yes, responsible, media outlet are completely different entities and serve different functions. A classic apples/oranges comparison. Of course media outlets have a duty to practice responsible journalism. They make decisions everyday about what to print or broadcast, just as you and I make decisions that involve not saying some of the things we think. Would the WaPo print a cartoon of Jesus stretched out on a bed, beckoning to a small child with a lollipop, and a leer on his his face, to illustrate church sexual abuse? I don't think so. Want to print or broadcast demeaning images of Jesus or Mohammed? Fine. Just don't call it responsible journalism. And let's stop with the faulty comparisons to Chris Ofila's Madonna, McNally's gay Jesus play, Serrano's piss Christ, etc. Remember: Critical thinking is your friend. (so is spell check)

5. Given that Kindasleezza has...
... done her level best to turn the press in a lot of nations into a propaganda arm for her President and dictator, I'd say she'd best shut up and leave it alone, before she finds herself the object of some unpleasant cartooning....

7. Did you HAVE to include the picture?
I WAS eating breakfast......now, well, I guess I'll have to look forward to lunch.

The media's "certain responsibility" she talks about? The responsibility to parrot the White House's talking points and try (somehow) to make bush look like a great leader. In other words, the media's responsibility is to lie to the American people.

10. "We are strong proponents of the freedom of the press."
NO. YOU'RE NOT.

If that were true, your whole clan would have been frog marched to the Hague by now.

What you meant to say was that you're a strong proponent of BUYING the press and feeding them memos to satiate the public and report the news that fit the needs of the suited bloodthirsters.

12. I'm sorry, but freedom always trumps "hurt feelings".
Unless you're putting people in immediate danger (fire in a crowded theater analogy), say anything you want. It's your right.
