Actually, what I think happens under the circumstances posited in the original post is that some people just withdraw their attention in one way or another. Some may go into denial, others may just feel helpless and resolve their discomfort by refusing to take in any more information, choosing instead to fill their awarenesses with something else. Missing brides, stupid sports, surreality TV, whatever.

5. Depends On The Personality Type.

Some will tune it out and go back to ignorance is bliss, some will just give up in defeat and depression due to low feelings of self worth and inability to recognize they have the power to help, still others will use each incident to fuel their desire to continue to fight for justice, integrity and honor, while others will not be able to focus the issues enough and will let the anger overtake them until they are filled with such frustration they lose the ability to use rational debate and logic, and are always stuck in high defensive gear. The final type will be like the last mentioned, but take it too far and end up with homeland security knocking at their door or in jail for cutting that car off with the bush sticker on it and then jumping out and punching their window.

All in all, the cumulative effects I've shown above can mostly all be seen on a daily basis, when jumping from thread to thread.

Please DO remind people that one does not 'get' a personality disorder as an adult. It's a pervasive method of functioning that has taken a long time to develop starting in one's childhood. Of course, stress can exacerbate any difficulties in functioning, as can any drug or alcohol use.:)
