Think US Athletes will get booed as they enter the stadium?
Since this is the first Olympics outside of the US since our Great Leader has shown his evil side, I make this dire prediction. I never thought is would come to this, but I feel that it will. A sad day all around. These kids don't deserve it, they have trained long and hard for this, but it is the perfect time for the world to make a statement to us.

3. Um, the 2004 Olympics were in Athens
So it's not the first Olympics since GWB declared war on the rest of the world.

4. I hope not
Yes there be a lot of disgust at US.
But I think many will be able to determine and differential what represent the will of the people and what represent the act of the goverment.

But I can assure you if bush goes yes they will boooooooooooo.

But it is likely that the event can be hijack to fan the flame of anti US
That will be sad.

5. They won't boo.
In fact, most non-uniformed Americans who dare venture outside the borders of the United States are normally taken in, fed soup and given a blanket.

7. Oh duh, forgot about the Greece Olympics, still in the every 4 year mode
and it is 3AM after all. I may work nights, but I never claimed to have gotten my brain engaged and used to it.

I hope that is doesn't happen, but i don't know. There is such anti-American sentiment out there.

I deal with international customers every night and everyone is more than gracious and friendly, so maybe I am wrong. I hope that I am.

Perhaps more coffee is the answer.

8. I don't think there'll be a lot of hostility in Italy
Edited on Fri Feb-10-06 03:39 AM by WildEyedLiberal
Also, I do think most foreigners draw a line of distinction between Americans and the American government run by George Bush. I think it was in France that a newspaper published an editorial expressing solidarity with the 60 million Americans who voted for Kerry right after the election.

BTW, here's some coffee for you: :donut:

9. It would be a tad hypocritical
To boo the US athletes for the actions of their government, because then you'd have to boo half the teams of Europe because they helped in those actions. Especially since these Olympics are in Italy, where Berlusconi is still in office.

With all the crap we've foisted on the world, I'm dreading the reaction when innocent American fans chant, "USA USA USA."

I'm an Independent patriot of the America which used to be respected globally as the shining light of freedom. Now I'm ashamed. Ashamed that "leaders" who are supposed to represent me have taken it upon themselves to outdo the despots of the world with ever more despotism -- thereby destroying the gains of generations of Americans' sacrifices.

This is not a patriotic administration. A patriotic administration would not clamp down on our freedoms (in the name of "national security") while freely allowing our borders to become a joke.

Our airports are as secure as our borders are open. :wtf:

17. Ok
the USA chant might get a reaction.
That I admit.
There will be booo but it will be against the chant not against the sportman.

The resentment against the bush misadministration is very real.
It lie just below the surface.
And hence it is so easy to utilise this to turn it into anti US
A single boo at the USA USA chant will result is mass participation.
That is sad.
But that will be just a natural reaction.

19. No, I don't think so.
Look at bode miller, he's a superstar in Europe, draws huge crowds everywhere he goes over there. Of course bode's made a few choice remarks about the administration, but that's another story.

22. Celebrities are rarely blamed for politics
The Olympics mood is one of friendship, and our athletes who trained in Europe and have spent the last two years competing in world competitions, have risen above and are apart from their countries petty squabbling. It is a whole different world. Now if politics enter the day, it will be during the medals ceremonies when the anthem is played. It will arrive in the form of banners and signs and maybe t-shirts and it will all point to Bush. The athletes will not be blamed. They are artists of a craft, not americans. I wonder of a terrorist attack tho.

23. Who cares?
The Olympics is a playground for the corporate super-rich and royalty (seriously). The previous head of the Olympics was a close friend of Franco. The entire business is rotten and should be boycotted.
