5 years ago: Submarine Joyriding Oilmen Sink Ehime Maru, Killing 9
Many of the 16 civilians were major contributors to the USS Missouri Memorial Association, a group established to restore and maintain the battleship on which Japan surrendered at the end of World War II. In addition, at least a third of the submarine's guests were associated with the Texas oil industry. The Navy would not comment whether any of these individuals were invited to ride on the submarine due to ties to President Bush or Vice President Cheney—both Texas oil men.

2. The headlines were especially vile: "US sub sinks Japanese ship
off Pearl Harbor"... not 'Oahu', not 'Honolulu', not 'Hawaii'... but "Pearl Harbor".

4. Yes indeed, Navy guys won't talk about it.
It's a pretty shamefull event in American history. They hung the Captain out to dry, but the dirty little secret is, it wasn't his choice.

5. Well it may not have been his choice to let the dudes on board, but
Edited on Fri Feb-10-06 10:58 AM by Mayberry Machiavelli
all the sub's maneuvers etc. are his responsibility. He definitely owns any collision, responsibility wise. Doesn't matter if he let the fat cat yahoos man the controls, that's HIS responsibility to make sure the sub was in a situation where that posed no risk.

If a Navy skipper grounds any ship or sub, it's pretty much automatic loss of command. Doesn't matter if the mistake was made by his potsmoking boatswain's mate who he had no reason not to trust, skipper's responsibility.

I'd imagine the same would be true of any apparently preventable collision, especially with a surface fishing boat that shouldn't be hard to detect.

7. Ties to Cheney energy taskforce?
I have wondered if the ban on releasing the names of the attendees of Cheney's energy taskforce is related to this.
