"Football Betting for Dummies"
please explain to me - what is the big deal with Wayne Gretzsky's wife betting on football?

A lot of people bet on football.

So what's the big deal?

2. It's the "insider trading" of the sports world
High profile sports people "know" people on the inside, and if bets are taken on their own sport, they could have influence on how the games get played..

They know whose wife just dumped him, who hurt himself at practice, who's broke and might need some quick money..

3. possible ties to New Jersey mafia
It is supposed that Rick Tochett had ties to the mafia in New Jersey. It is also unknown as of yet if any insider betting took place on hockey games. It isnt known, yet, if Wayne was in on it.
I saw Barry Melrose on Countdown and he put it into a good perspective (for me at least). Most people dont care or think its no big deal to gamble anymore, with office pools and the like, poker is a `hot` item on several TV shows, kids know how to play Texas Hold'em etc. But if nefarious things are associated with it, such as a tie-in to the mafia, and/or insider betting on hockey, that is a whole other ball of wax. Wayne Gretzsky , IF he didnt bet on hockey or didnt bet at all, will most likley retain his stature. If insider betting rears its ugly head..... He could be toast ala Pete Rose.

4. Insider gambling ring
Large sums of money changing hands, NHL officials/players involved, possible tax problems....

She hasn't been implicated yet, I don't think.

5. the problem is when people that are part of a professional sport team
or directly related to it beyond coaches and players.

When these team people/associated people start betting illegally(BTW is better odds than Vegas) these players will often at times incur BIG losses that they can not pay back. When this happens they are indebted to the bookies/mafia and these people usually want to get paid in some way or have a "favor" done. Now even though they are betting on another sport like football these people(like Wayne's wife) could directly influence the outcome of games in their sport like Hockey on behalf of the bookies/mafia to make a team lose so that the mafia/bookies can collect big time $$$$.

See even though they didn't bet on the Hockey game they still can influence it so that can pay off other debts from other sports.

Is that a little clearer, sorry if it confusing.

I hope this helps

11. it helps a lot
thanks, STB :hi:

It seems as if Gretzky's wife is becoming such a liability for him.

I heard on the news last night that she entered the marriage lying to him, as she admitted that she had lied about her age.

That's not a big deal to me, altho I can't understand why women (and men, too) do that.

I've always liked Wayne, and wish him the best.

intended, but from what I heard briefly, is that Wayne was well aware of what she was doing. If that is the case then all of them are done, as well as many others that we have had to hear about yet.

on edit when I first saw the title of your post I thought I was gonna see something like this

14. I would say that with the way officials have been calling games in the NFL
I really wonder how far this goes. I don't really think it's a conspiracy, but some of the calls made this past year in football really makes you go... HMMMMMM
