What cities does Air America need to expand to?
Edited on Fri Feb-10-06 01:47 PM by bluestateguy
As Air America nears its second anniversary, there are still some markets where AA still needs to break into, or get back into.

I went on their website and did a count of their 89 affiliates and found that 32 affiliates are in red states and 52 in blue states (some markets have 2 AA affiliates). So, AA should focus on getting into more red states, especially blue cities in red states, like Houston and St. Louis. AA also needs to get back on the air in Philadelphia. If anyone has any information on the status of that, let us know.

Other cities that come to mind would be Tuscon, Las Vegas, Little Rock, Indianapolis, and an affiliate in New Hampshire. A New Hampshire affiliate would be a good idea, so as to give Democratic presidential candidates a venue to court Democratic primary voters in 2007 and early 2008.

Houston, for sure!
I'd love to see liberal-minded folks buying small-town stations that might be rather inexpensive.

There's often not much to listen to on the radio in these rural towns and some lively talk might do a world of good in those locales.

They did have an affiliate in Philly, but they were dropped around the end of last year. My brother used to listen to Randi on the ride home and was pretty pissed when they were pulled.

79. Las Vegas Is On At Night
I'm able to pop into various markets and tune around and heard Randi on replay overnight on the station...looking at their homepage, looks like they program local news during the day.

I'm in Chicago...we only get AAR half the day, but hopefully that will change later on this year. The ratings and revenue successes of AAR affiliates are making waves in radio and surely someone will jump on the format in the market in short order.

I hope it happens soon!

some of them will cover a coupla of blocks (no license needed), hook it to the XM and find an 'unoccupied' FM Freq and occupy it! You'll be amazed what people will stop on when browsing across the dial (find a freq between two semi-poplar stations).

I've heard it a couple of times while in Madison. It's good to hear the liberal point of view getting continuous airtime. I do prefer the more gentle WPR format, but an aggressive style of radio seems more popular and it might wake up a few people around here.

18. Just from driving experience
I count dark territory as being between AAR affiliates. I know they position themselves with a different motivation than covering territory between large population centers but if someone were to map the swaths of dark territory it is alarming that those areas have zero media alternatives to mainstream garbage and generally all those areas have some of the worst hate propaganda imaginable thanks to Clear Channel and others.

I guess I think in terms of liberation of the air rather than profitable market shares. If anyone with vast driving experience, or an organizer of information, were to contribute to mapping out the radio wilderness it would be of service to people hopelessly channel flipping on the road.

Right now they have Limbaugh, Hannity, Drudge, and Ingraham (and sometimes Coulter on as a guest of any of them) on the FM band. Those tiny-brained, accuracy-free hatemongers need to be drowned out by the truth.

We have AAR here in Memphis and on a good day the signal travels as far as north Little Rock, but a consistent everyday presence would be a great thing. Here's hoping they don't let any local idiots on the air like they did here in Memphis, though. The local host they signed up believes prayer in schools and teaching evolution in science classes would be a good thing--and he's a homophobe, on top of that. x(

They're both long-time liberals and my dad, who was in the Navy for 23 years and is a Viet Nam veteran, absolutely hates W, his policies, and pretty much everything he stands for. 41. They not only need more stations
They need stations with more power. I researched this awhile back and found the vast majority of AAR stations are 5,000 watts or less, and most are "sundowners" — required to cut power at sundown.

This is pure economics; it's cheaper to get air time on smaller stations. I also think AAR is counting more on internet streaming and satellite radio.

I live about 25 miles from an AAR affiliate's transmitter, but I can't pick up a damned thing because it's a 1,000-watt station. Another one is about 15 miles away and I can barely get it, but it's not carrying AAR even though it's listed as an affiliate.

43. It would be nice if there were eventually a second, "stealth" Air America
channel. Designed specifically to draw in "on the fence" RWers who haven't drunk lethal amounts of koolaid yet. No strident hosts like Malloy/Seder/Randi. Similar arguments but presented in a more Springeresque tenor. Designed to draw in people sick of all the shouting and hatemongering in RW media, to listen a bit and start to think differently.

Right now, I think it's GREAT to have Air America in the Repub stronghold where I live. But I doubt the many shrub-bots I know would EVER listen to more than a minute of AAR, realize what they are hearing, and change the channel in shock.

With Ed Shultz it might be a double shock, because at first listen, he kind of sounds like the typical blustery overweight white guy RW radio host (our AAR station has him in the early afternoon).

And there are a lot of folks in Colorado who would listen to Ed Schultz, even if not AAR.

...anything. Damn I miss WBAI.
After "all things considered" on NPR the station turns into a neo-con economics lesson for local nutballs. All hail the "Bitch Mitch", and stuff like that.

53. Hudson Valley of New York.
It's red here (only 90 minutes from NYC) and I get horrible reception of WLIB - very bad in the early morning, and very bad at 3 p.m. A radio station from Indiana blasts through, and from what I can hear, it's very right wing.

GRRRRR...

Atlanta has it already...Atlanta had liberal radio first, before there was Air America. But that's about it. Elsewhere in Georgia, Columbus, Savannah, and Albany are all in blue areas. Others that could easily support Air America would be:

Mobile
New Orleans (if not already there)
Little Rock
Tallahassee
Jacksonville
Knoxville

Oh, and I have a Midwestern suggestion, just for fun: Metropolis, Illinois. If the home of Superman isn't receptive to liberal ideas, then we're screwed. :)

65. ORLANDO AND TAMPA - VERY IMPORTANT
The I-4 corridor (from Daytona-Orlando-Tampa) generally decides the Florida elections since the south is strongly dem and the north is strongly repuke. That said, sometimes I feel like my community (Orlando) is greatly responsible for this whole mess in the first place. 2000 sucked.

81. Pittsburgh - definitely Pittsburgh
How can we be a Super Bowl town without Air America?

I'd also like to get Ed Schultz here - I think he'd play well to this blue-collar, hunting/fishing, Steeler town.

At least we have local liber Lynn Cullen and Thom Hartmann follows her show.

BTW, O' Reilly is getting bumped to 10PM on KDKA in April, so most nights his show will be bumped or vastly shortened by Pirates baseball.

87. HOW CAN WE HELP? is the real question
Air America is empowering the left and informing the right...what could be more important? It aint perfect, but it is helping BIG time! Say what you will about Ed Shultz(who is not AA but same idea) but he has republicans calling all the time, fed up with their party. They feel comfortable with him and tell them how upset they are with the shredding of our constitution. Minds are changing, and left radio is helping people find their voice.

I was shocked when I heard how few stations were carrying it. We have to collectively brainstorm ideas on HOW to either get stations to change over, by showing them where the money is heading, or starting stations of our own.
