They're even fighting about Bush on Ebay
I wasn't sure where to post this, but if you go to eBay discussion forums here: http://forums.ebay.com/db2/thread.jspa?threadID=2000076927&tstart=0&mod=1139598306293

a seller posted this: "I ship a lot internationally on a daily basis. From now on, I'm putting on all my international packages - "Dear world, I deeply apologize for our President." It's my small way of making the world more at peace."

There are now 899 posts on the thread. Gee, what a uniter our dear pResident is.

I didn't realize so many RWers sold on Ebay. Another reason not to shop there.

16. please don't assume that about eBay. There are many smaller & more Liberal
ebay auction boards. The eBay discussion boards are an easy place for freepers to be a pitb because you can just make up a new name and keep being a jerk. There are many Liberal sellers I know that deliberately go over there to try to give balance but many have left after bashing their heads into the brick wall way too many times. It's the main reason I only post there at all anymore is when it's about eBay itself and even that is a rare occurance.

eBay is made up of many sellers and in many ways it is the great equalizer in that no one knows what the seller of buyer looks like, believes, is handicapped with, etc. Yes, there are some RWers but there are also many that are Liberals. Yesterday there as a thread about Cindy doing a charity auction on eBay. It's not uncommon for fundraisers to be done there for many worthwile causes.. for instance the one Cindy is helping, there is a group called DOUA that helps the disabled start a business on eBay and become more self sufficient and I have a friend that sells for a cat rescue group.

There are also many small "Blue" sellers like myself and my husband are using ebay in an attempt to make ever widening ends meet or that can't find jobs so find a niche on eBay with hopes of paying their bills. Quite frankly I don't know how we'd have gotten this far without selling on eBay to help pay for oil, taxes, pet food, etc. Over the years I've been selling (and occasionally buying) on eBay I've been lucky to meet and get to know many ebay sellers that were strong Dem voters and very progressive. They are the very heart of eBay and there are many very good people. eBay isn't just a building in San Jose... it's not just "Republican" or "Democrat", Liberal or Conservative. eBay is ALL of the people that both buy and sell there... there are Republicans, Democrats, Greens, Indep, expatriots, Christians, Jews, Pagans, Atheists, blacks, whites, Native Americans, Chinese, etc. So please don't assume that ebay is a RW bastion... to assume that eBay is RW territory negates all those other people who work hard to eek out a living in difficult financial times.

Goodness knows there have been many times when I have been absolutely livid with something stupid that ebay has done (I've been a part of a few "protests" on there over the years) but for many good folks it helps keep them afloat which is more then I can say for BushCo and the neo-Repubs.

26. That's why I went over there
I need the extra money and I work a job that that does not allow for a second job - no time. So I'm trying to sell stuff on eBay, and a few books on Amazon. No, I don't make much, but it helps, and if I didn't sell it, it would just be sitting around the house.

28. Quite right.
I sell my "old junk" (as well as new "junk" and other people's "old junk," for that matter) on Ebay, not because I'm too cheap to donate it (I do donate when I can), but because I make my living that way. I am most assuredly a liberal. I've never bothered with Ebay's discussion forums, though, simply because I don't have the time, energy, or inclination for it. I'm just there to sell stuff that people want (I've gotten some very encouraging mail from my buyers at times - items they'd been looking for since they were kids, for instance, or something that made their kids totally happy), and to survive on my own terms. Ebay is a great opportunity for people like me, who otherwise would have no options.

36. Thanks for the info.
I wish you the best. I hardly ever shop on Ebay, anyway, so it's not like I would be avoiding it just because of this one post. I was thrilled when I found out about Buy Blue.org because I had already been making an effort to support local merchants, merchants who sold organic products, etc. It was empowering because it gave me information I needed to make better choices about where I spent my money.

I can understand why many retailers would make the decision to not give out any information about their political leanings, so as not to offend any potential customers. If I have to choose between a company I know is right wing and a company I have no information about, I would choose the latter. But if my choice is between a company I have no information about, and a company that I know supports progressive/liberal causes, I will always choose to support the "blue".

7. Know why?
All the Democratic people I know donate their excess to charity -- All republicans tend to resale it (eBay, classifieds, flea market, consignment)

10. The forums may not be indicative of eBay in general. There are a lot
Edited on Fri Feb-10-06 02:29 PM by Humor_In_Cuneiform
of people who live on their forums as much as we live on DU and other political blogs, forums.

So what brings them together there?

Not politics or interest in the world at large.

Among the more hotly discussed issues was the merits or not of the practice of "sniping," ie bidding at the last possible moment of the auction.

It is permitted, so why not?

Also a lot of regular sellers don't just sell old excess stuff, but actually sell inventory they acquire for resale. Like yours truly.

12. there sure are a lot of rip-offs from eBay!
I'm disgusted after a recent experience. Ebay only backs up the seller, not the buyer that got ripped off! And as for PayPal, they are in on the game with eBay big time as I'm sure most everyone knows that is aware of eBay.

Many sell old junk that not even a charity would take. I know this from personal experience.

And much of the junk comes from "estate" sales as well. I find "estate" sales to be rather depressing personally.

So my message to eBay is a simple ... Go Cheney Yourselves!!!

The seller is who I blame. It is obvious what they are doing to rip people off. I told eBay about it and they refer you to PayPal.

9. I posted at their forums mainly to learn stuff about eBay in the
beginning of my eBaying.

When Bagdad fell, there were a bunch of really gung ho pro war posts.

And the slightest hint of finding WMD provoked one of them "Ok, so you anti war guys going to apologize now?" type posts.

And there were people who stated out right next is Syria, Iran etc etc.

A Canadian poster was raked over the coals for posting a thoughful post about what has happened to the USA we knew and admired. Except I supported the individual and welcomed their input.

I only go back to talk about eBay issues now.

And I just avoid politics with my international buyers. Most of them are UK or Canada. Australia.

Occasionally Japan, Hong Kong, Israel.

13. Something I have noticed...
Freeper types set up shop on ANY forum that is open or has somewhere that they can spew. They have no manners or shame, and will hijack any forum that lets them. I don't think this has anything to do with eBay since I've seen it everywhere.

14. I saw a group of freeper types attack a weather message board.
They attacked it because it was about "northeast" weather. Hundreds of idiotic illiterate posts about everyone in the northeast being a homo liberal and such. It killed the board, everyone left, noone comes back, over a year now.

24. Just because he's an eBayer
Doesn't mean he can't also be a spamming freeper. I doubt most sellers have any interest in using eBay forums to discuss politics. My point is they will use any forum to spew their garbage that allows them to, where progressives tend to respect the nature of a forum. So it doesn't necessarily reflect on the origin of the forum or the people on the site. They've hijacked forums that have nothing to do with politics, especially if they have an "off-topic" or General Discussion area. eBay is no different.

29. That's true... just as much as not all eBayers are Freepers or rip off
artists selling junk.

Most Liberals I know who sell on eBay avoid the ebay boards in favor of smaller and independant auction discussion boards where Liberals usually tend to outnumber Repubs by quite a bit.

Most of the folks I know personally from off ebay auction boards are LIBERALS who are trying to make a basic living or make ends meet in this "lovely" economy we have.

Didn't he say something about eBay being a major part of the economy? Only someone who was hanging out there and never actually going into the real world to shop, would have that attitude (and I say that as an occasional eBayer, myself).
