"Fox Trashes Evangelical Christians...Who Believe in Global Warming"
In a First, Fox Trashes Evangelical Christians...Who Believe in Global Warming

Evangelical Christians are usually welcomed with open arms on Fox News but apparently the thought of evangelical Christians believing in global warming is too much for Fox to take. After all, believing that global warming is a real thing is heresy, not necessarily against God, but against those other gods, the radicals in the Bush administration.

A group of evangelical Christians, including 85 evangelical Christian leaders, have banded together to form a group called the Evangelical Climate Initiative. The group has produced a television ad urging Christians to become involved in the issue of global warming and it placed a full page ad in today's New York Times. Neil Cavuto hosted two of the group's leaders on Your World today (February 9, 2006), but before they were introduced, he prejudiced his audience by associating the group with (according to the teachings of Fox) the nearly-communist New York Times, hedonistic "Hollywood," whacked-out Al Gore, and a Kennedy, the family that's liberal to the point of insanity.

The segment opened with a clip from the group's television ad. The announcer said: "As Christians, our faith in Jesus Christ compels us to love our neighbors and to be stewards of God's creation. The good news is that with God's help, we can stop global warming for our kids, our world, and our Lord." Then Cavuto appeared on screen and said: This ad is part of "a massive advertising campaign" by a group headed "by 85 evangelical Christian leaders who are sounding the alarm about global warming. They even took out a full page ad in today's New York Times. It is an issue that has been pretty much owned by Hollywood and the likes of Al Gore and Robert Kennedy, so can these men of God do something these folks could not - convince America to get serious about global warming?"

It gets worse....

Yesterdays New York Times article:

Evangelical Leaders Join Global Warming Initiative

By LAURIE GOODSTEIN

Despite opposition from some of their colleagues, 86 evangelical Christian
leaders have decided to back a major initiative to fight global warming,
saying "millions of people could die in this century because of climate
change, most of them our poorest global neighbors."

"We have not paid as much attention to climate change as we should, and
that's why I'm willing to step up," said Duane Litfin, president of
Wheaton College, an influential evangelical institution in Illinois. "The
evangelical community is quite capable of having some blind spots, and my
take is this has fallen into that category."

...Some of the nation's most high-profile evangelical leaders, however, have
tried to derail such action. Twenty-two of them signed a letter in January
declaring, "Global warming is not a consensus issue." Among the signers
were Charles W. Colson, the founder of Prison Fellowship Ministries; James
C. Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family; and Richard Land, president of
the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist
Convention....

3. Yeah
Even though Dobson and the "most high-profile evangelical leaders" are apparently sticking to the party line.

It is good to see a break, however - I guess the 86 "radicals" took out an ad in the New York Times. :)

4. Holy shit!
I can't believe how toxically infected FOX News is. I haven't watched them since the 2000 election, when I gave up my cable. My world is happier, more reasonable, more optimistic and freer without Fox News.

So it comes as no surprise that some Fox personality would try to 1) claim that some one "pretty much owns" the issue of global warming, in an attempt to politicize it as an "ownership" issue involving good guys and bad guys and this issue happens to be owned by the bad guys, right?

And 2) masks the fact that their interests in the issue are completely corporate bottom line controlled. They try to make a bad association for the issue by painting it as "liberal" when it isn't, it's really non-political, and then they lie about why they're besmirching it--because corporate profits may not be as spectacular in the short term.

I'm glad they are acting this way. It's like Cheney, Bush and Rumsfeld: the whole world is witnessing their self-delusion and learning not to trust them.

5. If we want to stop global warming...
...Cavuto and company should shut their pie holes to keep all the hot air from coming out.

8. And so it begins - dividing the segregated chosen ones
we all know it would happen eventually. Now, not only do you need to be an evangelic, you need to believe a certain way about other issues as well.

We knew it would happen, I just didn't expect it to begin so soon. This is really good news. I hope they talk this issue up, loudly and often until the next "line is drawn in the sand". They will eventually remove all that think for themselves by their own hand.

9. I saw these people on that Faux show
I dont think it was too bad imo. He was trying to make them feel ashamed for being in the same boat as Al Gore and the Hollywood set, but they handled him well. Cavuto came off looking ridiculous.

BTW Im heartened that these Christians are finally starting to act like Christians.

13. Unfortunately
I know people who - as long as FOX and Dobson say there is no consensus on global warming and that only "liberals" (gasp!!) could think there is a problem to be concerned about - they will believe FOX.

14. My BIL is one of them. He says since he can see a difference in the
level of the water in the harbor when he compares pictures from the late 1800's and now that therefore there is no global warming.

12. Shame on FOX News, that is, in general and with this issue particularly.
Most of those "environmental" Christians are MUCH closer to the ministry of Jesus than FOX will ever get to actual reporting.

My hat's off for any push toward environmental protection and awareness, and credit where it's due to those Christian groups.

And to hell with FOX.

17. "It is an issue that has been pretty much owned by Hollywood ...
... and the likes of Al Gore and Robert Kennedy" - no it's not. It's "owned" by 99% of the climate scientists. That's why we need to act - because the experts have studied it extensively, and come to conclusions. It's not a question of the marketing of the facts - however much the right wing think they can manufacture the truth when they want to persuade people. Doesn't Fox make you sick?
