You CANNOT MISS CBS 60 Minutes on Sunday! "Billions Wasted In Iraq?"
Billions Wasted In Iraq?

Feb. 9, 2006
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(CBS) Some $8.8 billion dispersed for reconstruction efforts in Iraq is unaccounted for, says the U.S. official in charge of tracing it.

For a report to be broadcast this Sunday, Feb. 12, at 7 p.m. ET/PT,
60 Minutes correspondent Steve Kroft investigates the billions spent on reconstruction-related work, particularly money paid to a contractor, Custer Battles, now being sued for fraud.

Stuart Bowen, special inspector general for Iraq reconstruction, says $8.8 billion is unaccounted for because oversight on the part of the Coalition Provisional Authority, the entity governing Iraq after the war, "was relatively nonexistent."

The former No. 2 man at the Coalition's transportation ministry, Frank Willis, concurs. "I would describe (the accounting system) as nonexistent." Without a financial infrastructure, checks and money transfers were not possible, so the Coalition kept billions in cash to pay for its multitude of projects. "Fresh, new, crisp, unspent, just-printed $100 bills. It was the Wild West," says Willis. <snip>

20. Vacation homes, too ... all over the world.
It seems the only 'work' these fascist fat cats are doing is running around and catching all the dollars being dumped overboard from our "ship of state" into their yachts.

13. You'd think $8.8 Billion would turn some heads
That amount alone could end child poverty in the US.

3. We all predicted this here. It will make no difference. Nothing seems to
Look at today's headlines. And the last few years. Richard Clarke was right on. And over and over again, his analysis has proven true. The media is underreporting intentionally yet again. This administration can do anything it wants, and only a few voices speak up. Like DU. Thank God. It's not enough.

16. This is not news
My god, many of us knew the DOD was giving away millions to Halliburton, who through their contracting subsidiaries, couldn't account for the money 2 %^$#in' years ago. Corporate media are worthless in many respects.

23. With all due respect, as another Du'er pointed out
Most of mid-America, as I, will be watchin' the Olympics, which is why CBS is now getting the bull by the horns, but in actuality, it will be a bull without his cajones.

The Rethugs own Corporate Media, including CBS.

claimed to be a Katrina victim and got one of the cash cards FEMA was handing out will be prosecuted. Yet mention wa made of the missing money in Iraq.
