“John Boehner - Cafeteria Catholic”
“John Boehner - Cafeteria Catholic”

John Boehner’s Office – 202-225-6205

In his January 17th letter to the “Republican Values Action Team” new House Majority Leader Rep. John Boehner (R–OH) stated;” I believe I have a moral responsibility to fight for that which the late Pope fought” How confused the late Holy Father would be by this statement if only he knew that Boehner has repeatedly voted in Congress in favor of issues contrary to what Pope John Paul II fought for.

Boehner like most cafeteria Catholics, has made the decision to use his Catholicism to rally support around a single issue; abortion. Boehner does not even touch on the subject of working towards an end to abortion by addressing the real life causes of abortion. Instead of focusing on issues that will reduce the tragedy of abortion, we get more of the same rhetoric that makes abortion such a volatile wedge issue in election years. Instead of the same tired old rhetoric surrounding the abortion debate, we need fresh new and bold ideas that are grounded in sound research and common sense.

Research conducted by the Alan Guttmacher Institute shows that half of pregnancies in this country are unplanned and half of those end in abortion. The realities of economic hardship also factor into women’s choice for abortion. We must address the three million unintended pregnancies per year through grants for age appropriate pregnancy prevention education. We must be capable of openly discussing appropriate sex education programs and promoting abstinence for teens. We must provide support for pregnant women in ways that encourage them to continue their pregnancies such as day care, pregnancy counseling on campuses, permanent adoption tax credits, better availability for referral information, shelters for women and children in crisis pregnancies, support for safe haven laws and better medical insurance for mothers and children through their first year of life.

Boehner voted against debt reduction for Africa. In the last year of his life, the Holy Father spoke often regarding the problem of the imbalance between the riches and poverty of the world today."

Boehner voted for the Iraq war. A war that the Holy Father deemed a “Defeat for Humanity” and further stated: “How can we not think with profound regret of the drama unfolding in Iraq, which has given rise to tragic situations of uncertainty and insecurity for all?” - Pope John Paul II, Do Not Be Overcome By Evil But Overcome Evil With Good, 2005 World Day of Peace Message

Boehner voted for the Budget Reconciliation Act that has robbed the poor in this nation and given back to the rich. The Holy Father would certainly wonder why Boehner would vote for such a bill that goes against what Jesus calls us to do in the Gospels. Where does this pandering to the wealthy fit into the fabric of Catholic Social Teaching?

Catholic for Faithful Citizenship Director John Kelly commented today. “If political rhetoric was a solution the problem would be solved. We can all recite the favored lines about life, culture and family. Rhetoric is no different than a jet passing overhead – an empty roar that fades into the background noise with no noticeable impact.”

America has paid a high moral and political price since the 1973 decision. If Boehner wants to use his Catholicism for political gain, then he should begin by embracing the rich tradition of our Social Teaching. Until then, he is no more than a sound byte for those who wish to co-opt the Catholic Faith for political gain. Boehner has shown a total disregard for those impoverished, those who are without jobs, and the least among us. To claim he is for families when it is clear that only wealthy families need apply, Boehner betrays the memory of Pope John Paul II.

1. This should be thrown in Boenher's (&other pukes) faces
I really don't like religion entering the political arena at all, but I'll be damned if I'll sit back and let *them* pervert religion to meet their political agenda w/o it being thrown back in their face.

2. Ignoring Boehner for now, one statement in this post shocked me!
Research conducted by the Alan Guttmacher Institute shows that half of pregnancies in this country are unplanned.

THAT is an astounding statement! Am I to actually believe that that many women of just careless, stupid, or uninformed?

IF that reasearch data is true, as a Country, we need to find a cure for the cause of unplanned pregnancies, and stop focusing so much on fixing the problem via abortion AFTER the fact!

I still can't believe that number could be 50%!!!!!

3. I understand your "shock", however ...
"Am I to actually believe that that many women of just careless, stupid, or uninformed?"

Takes two to make a baby .. are you also shocked that many "men" are "just careless, stupid, or uninformed?" too?

7. I'm well aware it takes two! HOWEVER only ONE can get pregnant!
I'm a female, so don't try to paint me as a sexist. The RISK is the woman's alone! There are MANY BS methods on the market, and most of them are used by the woman. I'd be a bit surprised if most men are always going to volunteer to use a condom all the time.

Somehow, I doubt the "unplanned pregnancies" are all women who don't believe in BC!

I suspect it has a lot to do with an "It won't happen to me" attitude! The odds aren't real great in Russian Roulette!

4. What do we know about this institute? Is it bona fide and can the data be
trusted?

Beyond that I can say that 50% of my pregnancies were unplanned. Tried like crazy for the first one, but the second one just happened. (My fault. Miscounted in my cycle and thought it was safe to have a little fun with hubby. Can't say that I am sorry. Love my littlest guy as much as the big one. :D)

8. You made me think about the phrase "unplanned" in that study.
I'm usually pretty good at reading alternative meanings inside studies like this, and that COULD be the explaination of the 50%.

What did they really mean by "unplanned"? Was it a lot of couples who were not planning anything, but having another baby wasn't a problem?

I think the better study would have asked about "UNWANTED" pregnancies, don't ya think?

9. Exactly, which is why I said my second kid wasn't planned for, and even
then he really was planned for.. but we'd meant to wait one more year before trying to have him, but I guess he was ready to come earlier that that. *g* (Not surprising. He's the most impatient tyke you ever met!)

6. Pope John Paul II also publicly said that G. Bush is the anti-christ
and wanted to live long enough to fight him. Are you going to fight THAT fight Boehner?
