Falwell Calls Global Warming "Junk Science"
Pious patriot asswipe spouts off against his evangelical brethren. Bolded for emphasis.

FALWELL CONFIDENTIAL

Insider weekly newsletter to The Moral Majority Coalition and

The Liberty Alliance http://www.moralmajority.com

Date: February 10, 2006

From: Jerry Falwell

CLIMATE INITIATIVE IS A BAD IDEA

A group of more than 80 evangelical leaders has released a statement conveying what they describe as a biblically-driven pledge to address issues of “global warming.”

The group, which includes The Purpose Driven Life author Rick Warren, called on the government to ratify legislation aimed at reducing carbon dioxide emissions that allegedly contribute to global climate change.

Issued by the Evangelical Climate Initiative, the statement declares: “This is God’s world, and any damage that we do to God’s world is an offense against God himself.”

Signers said the statement was brought about by a concern for the impact global warming will have on people, especially poor nations and individuals.

“The consequences of global warming,” the statement reads, “will hit the poor the hardest, in part because those areas likely to be significantly affected first are the poorest regions of the world.”

Many of the people who signed this document are my friends — some are dear friends. Nevertheless, I have felt compelled to oppose their effort because I believe that global warming is an unproven phenomenon and may actually just be junk science being passed off as fact.

In addition, I believe that so-called solutions to global warming — and particularly the Kyoto Protocol, which is the politically-correct international agreement to fight greenhouse gas emissions — would devastate the American economy if adopted by our nation. Further, studies have shown that costly efforts to stem greenhouse gas emissions would just barely reduce global temperatures.

Paul Driessen, senior policy adviser for the Congress of Racial Equality and author of Eco-Imperialism: Green Power ∙ Black Death, recently stated, “By making energy less affordable and accessible, mandatory controls (on greenhouse-gas emissions) would drive up the costs of consumer products, stifle economic growth, cost jobs, and impose especially harmful effects on the earth’s poorest people.”

That’s a bottom line our nation cannot endorse.

I believe that my dear friends who have signed onto the Evangelical Climate Initiative have acted prematurely and really need to examine countering opinions on global warming.

There are many respected scientists who feel that present warming trends are a cyclical phenomenon; they point to the 70s, only 30 years ago, when many scientists were similarly predicting a global cooling.

It is also important to note that China, India and other major nations who comprise more than half of the world’s population have stated they will not participate in such agreements.

Evangelicals must be very cautious in addressing issues of such magnitude, especially when the jury is still out on the magnitude of the “problem.”

Alan Wisdom, president of the Institute on Religion and Democracy, stated this week, “Churches should be reluctant to attach the name of the Gospel of Christ to contemporary political agendas that lack a clear scriptural mandate and consensus among the faithful.” (ohmy fucking god, can you believe this shit??? Talk about hypocracy!!)

I think those are very wise words.

At most, I recommend asking the U.S. government to take reasonable measures to establish limits on emissions at the federal level and “to pass and implement national legislation requiring sufficient economy-wide reductions in carbon dioxide emissions through cost effective, market-based mechanisms.” I stop right there for fear of starting some “toboggan slide” toward reckless and hurtful decisions which will greatly diminish our nation and likely injure our children and children’s children.

Well make up your mind. It is either unfounded "junk science" or it is too costly to try and stem emmisions and it would only barely reduce global tempertures. It certainly can't be both....

The Kyoto Protocol is a useless tool.

I know that is a near sacrilege around here, but before you pass judgment, actually read the thing and ask yourself, "is anybody actually doing the things in the protocol they agreed to do? .........No one is. Not even close.

Today India is building five new coal burning plants.

37. Of course if you take it out of the political context
as you've done, you have a point. But if you look at the foot draggging by the US, Australia, and others that delayed implementation for 7 years it is no surprise that targets aren't being met. Had the protocol been ratified in the late 90s there would be a much different story.

41. You are correct to a point
Had the protocol been ratified in the late 90s there would be a much different story.

The only difference would be the US, Australia could be added to the list of countries that didn't meet the targets.

The Kyoto protocol is an outdated, unrealistic, unattainable political tool that doesn't really address the problems.

The UN should stick to feeding and giving medical attention to small children and small countries. It is what it does best. {except when raping the little girls it feeds}

The rest of it's mandate, has turned into pure unadulterated politically demagoguery on the scale unknown since the Roman Senate, which ruled the world.

42. There are weaknesses to the Kyoto Protocol
but it's quite obvious that you don't know what they are. Instead, I see a tired re-run of Jimmy Inhofe. Add that to your hysterical generalizations about the UN and you'll fit right in at the local chapter of the John Birch Society.

There are no real problems over there on the east river that a little more money and power can't fix.

See, I have reprogrammed my John Birch Society mind chip. :sarcasm:

OTOH.

I can't help it if you are blind to how politically polluted and corrupted the UN is. The truth about the UN is as plain as the hair on a freepers knuckles dragging the ground.

The UN can and should be the organization it was meant to be. Too bad it isn't. If you can't see that. I'm sorry.

45. and to answer the question about the weakness of the protocol.
The Kyoto Protocol biggest weakness is in it's inherent lack of ability to actually make any country live up to it's targets.

Russia, India and China are right now not blatantly ignoring the agreement they signed onto. At least the Unites States doesn't pretend to play along

56. You've confirmed my assertion that you don't know much about Kyoto
The Kyoto Protocol limits emissions to a percentage increase or decrease from their 1990 levels. Since 1990 the economies of most countries in the former Soviet Union have collapsed, as have their greenhouse gas emissions. Because of this, Russia is having no problem meeting its commitments under Kyoto, as its current emission levels are substantially below its targets.

As non-Annex I (developing) countries, China and India have no targets under Kyoto. Following the principle of "common but differentiated responsibility" detailed in the UNFCCC, China and India expect to gain from the protocol in terms of transfer of technology and related foreign investments.

If you replace "many" with "some", this statement is true as far as I know. There are indeed scientific skeptics on this issue who make interesting informed points.

"It is also important to note that China, India and other major nations who comprise more than half of the world’s population have stated they will not participate in such agreements."

This is also true.

built as it is around a 19th Century interpretation of the "Book of Revelations"

It is based on the "Book of Revelations" -(actually The Revelation of Jesus Christ ... unto his servant John) - a book which both Saint John Chrysostom and Martin Luther condemned because inter alia it is neither apostolic nor prophetic, and because of the difficulties of interpreting it and the danger for abuse (Saint John Chrysostom).

58. long history of antagonism with science in Chrisitan History
Chrisitan Histroy (that is to say not christianity) has an unforunately long history of antagonism with science.

Pope Gregory I burned down the library of the Palatine Apollo, since its secular literature might distract the faithful from contemplation of heaven. Gregory's book the Dialogues tells great tales of saints.

The pious saint Honoratus called upon Christ, made the sign of the cross and stopped a boulder from rolling down upon his monasterary.

When the monk Placidus fell into a lake, the monk Marcus rescued him by walking on the water and hauling Placidus up by his hair.

Then of course everyone remembers the Burning of the library by mobs lead by Bishop Theophilus and the death of Hypatia (d. 415 by having her skin flayed off her body by oyster shells) for teaching Plato.

Oh well...
