Wishing Fossett would just die trying, and put an end to it.

I'm getting pretty tired of Fossett's attempting an irrelevant record. Usually, I don't wonder how people can justify spending their own money, but he's at the point where he just pays through the nose for a piece of high tech equipment, straps himself in, and goes nowhere for no purpose. Thinking that he has heirs who can put the money to better use if he should fail this time in a big way.

That's up in the air. Heck, it's even got two (count'em! 2) seats. The GlobalFlyer only sits one. It's clearly far worse than this plane from 100 years ago!

Nope, nothing new about the GlobalFlyer.

Now excuse me, I've go to go shoe my horse so it will be ready for my commute, tomorrow.

It's all pretty pointless. I think your attempt to make it something else fails.

Any human endeavor can be seen as pointless from some vantage. To me, it only becomes a problem (and something to complain about) when it harms someone else.

It's a huge amount of money to fuel a worthless hobby. All sorts of similar activities don't hurt anyone, they just don't cost as much money. The fact that all human activity seems pointless from some vantage doesn't disguise the fact this is pointless from all vantages.

I'll allow that his tombstone should read, "He spent millions of dollars that didn't help anybody or achieve anything worthwhile, but didn't get anyone killed but himself".

33. Then let's eliminate ALL wasted spending.
No more sports. No more arts. No more helping chronically ill or disabled people, for they are just a drag on our resources, an inefficient use of our capabilities.

Let's make our selves so efficient we no longer have any clue whatsoever being "human" means any more. Let's rip out any semblance of adventure. Let's shatter any myth of romance. Let's burn any fiction, let's crush any artistic creation, let's replace all colors with a single gray.

Let's?

Some people feel a need to travel and explore as strong as they need to eat and breath. Some feel a similar need to create art, perform music, raise children, program computers, heal diseases, or compete in sports. When we deny anyone the ability to try these things, we deny our own humanity. We become less than ourselves.

Let Us Not.

37. No, let's spend ALL our money on toys! Because we have NO standards!
If someone spends money to buy a work of art, then there is absolutely NOTHING IN THE UNIVERSE that can distinguish that spending from my buying my fiftieth Bentley.

Because YOU want to spend money on charity, then there is no moral code in existence that let's anyone criticize my purchase of a sixty million dollar mansion to compliment my one hundred million dollar mansion.

Or my six thousandth hooker.

Or another small Pacific Island.

Because I FEEL IT STRONGLY that I need to do these things is all you need to know.

I could use the ridiculous example of an around the world balloon ride, but it's too ridiculous to comtemplate. Fossett had to invent it.

52. Some private. News Teams invited.
Fact is, the guy doesn't want it private, he wants to claim a public record and have all the news people attend. He's inviting an opinion. He just intends to be a good one, that's all.

I still get to say that I think it's a godawful waste of money, and that he should be ashamed for his expensive vanities. Otherwise, there's no reason to call for anyone to give to charity or to pay taxes or to, as you said, fund art or real exploration. You've chosen a completely amoral standard for personal spending. I don't want that. At some point, it's a waste of HIS money that I get to comment on. Fossett's WAY past that.

No sweat equity involved. He demonstrated this in sailing when he broke Peter Hogg's singlehanded sailing record across the Pacific. Hogg invested every nickel and every waking moment working on the project for years, only to have it broken within a months by Steve Fossett. Steve just stepped aboard his big nickel boat waiting for him and went for it. Hogg now skippers for Fossett. Ain't America grand!

I'm not really sure what this guy did to become your biggest hero besides make money and spend it on his little projects that please himself.

Sure, he can spend his money on whatever he likes, and he doesn't have to justify it to me. I don't know why that makes him your personal pinup boy. He chose something that strikes me as foolish at best.

If you want a thread thanking the rich for their excesses, I'm sure you can post one or two.

But not you, you think that because he can spend his money on whatever he likes, he should waste it on his own vanity and anyone who thinks differently, well, there just jealous Jacobins.

That's real progressive. Next time some rich guy complains that his taxes prevent him from digging the World's Largest Hole and parachuting in, I'll tell him it's the liberal thing to do, because we don't ever, ever, ever have an opinion on anything and its HIS MONEY.

But oh I forgot. We as progressives should tell people how to spend their money, and if they decide to do something one of us doesn't agree with, we should just urge them to stop, or die. Whichever comes first...

I'll say it again. You're jealous of his money.

After all, it's perfecting a nineteenth century technology. Look how many uses it has in real life. Why, it's the cure to the traffic problem.

And someone might not like the same thing I do. But when I'm knee deep in hookers and cocaine, just to see how much I can take, I'm sure nobody will criticize me unless they are just jealous. After all, why could anyone ever take issue with any rich person, except jealously.

And nobody asked me how I would move the nation foward with a few million, and I'm wondering why not. I think I could do more with ten bucks than your hero Fossett did with all his vanities piled one on top of another.

I guess you never got past the stage of declaring that Fossett should be thanked for taking his millions and throwing it down a rat hole. I guess that being really progressive is saying "it's his money" and elevating whatever he wants to do with it from legally permissiable to a moral good. How progressive.

But what do I know. I'm just jealous, right?

Is that how you shield yourself from the fact of your own noxious record? Imagine that you are delivering a "pummeling"? How sad. As is your fear of women who contradict you. Doesn't speak well of you at all.

And the insults just keep coming, don't they? Even in a post where you try to portray yourself as a victim of some sort, all you do is spew out poison. Projecting again, describing your own inadequacies by ascribing them to others, which seems to be your style.

What a sickness. You started athread wishing someone would die simply for indulging in adventure as a hobby. And now you're all bent out of shape and whimpering "go away go away go away."

Actually thinking yourself intellectual. You're the Perfesser in the same way a bald guy is called Curley.

49. "I really do". From the person who parachuted in with the insults.
Now wants to pretend to be the politeness police. I've never met a person with less function, and more hypocrisy, than your self serving, self important, pretentious Perfersser Z.

Just go away, Politeness Person. You are getting what you asked for, and if you don't like it, don't start it and for god's sake, stop being yourself. Take a class or something.

Now that's funny. In a thread about wishing someone dead, no less!

And in the same breath, you fling a few more insults! :D

Every complaint you've aired describes you to a "T."

And I suspect you know it -- perhaps that's what has you in such a constant state of bitterness and rage.

60. You're being lectured about your hypocrisy and worthless posts.
So clueless to the fact you can't be both insulting and the politeness police, both parachute in with insults and then complain about tone, have nothing to say and pretend to be smart.

You can't figure it out. Any other person would be ashamed of themselves, but you, you are driven by your own self importance to come to a battle of wits armed with zippo.

Go find a use for yourself.

You've got no positions, no function, except to pretend you are better than other people and able to critique them.

But you've nothing. Your posts are vapid, pretentious, self congratulatory. You wouldn't know an idea besides your own self importance if it bit you on the ass.

Go take a class and learn something. And don't raise your hand the first day, because you'll make an ass out of yourself. Perfesser.

The Perfesser has no function but to pretend superiority and the right to lecture everyone else on the quality of their posts. That it requires hypocrisy and pretense to an intellectual standard the Perfesser can't achieve is of no concern for the Perfesser.
