What should be first item on agenda of new Democratic Congress?
In my opinion, they should state that the Constitution is supreme in our country. We are a country of laws and not men. No man is above the law. Then they should announce an investigation into the NSA spying and appoint an independent prosecutor for the job.

If the President of the United States intentionally broke the laws of this country, he will be held accountable, just like any other American citizen. That should be the first item on the agenda of a new Democratic Congress. No doubt, the Repubs would scream partisanship and witch hunt and threats to national security, but let them scream. We need to get to the bottom of this story and we need courageous Congressmen willing to do the job. That's why we need to make sure our Party wins in November with the people willing to make waves.

then reversal of all chimp initiatives. Finally, public trials for the neo-cons at the Hague.

7. The first 15 seconds after John Conyers takes over chairmanship of
the House Judiciary Committee - GET THOSE IMPEACHMENT PROCEEDINGS STARTED!!!

VERY FIRST THING.

Followed by trial in the Senate and, hopefully, removal from office.

And don't start with me about how that'll leave cheney in command. I DON'T CARE. He won't last long. Cutting off the head of the beast will send enough of a signal. It will yank him rudely out of the shadows and out from behind the curtain, and force him into the sunlight - which is the best disinfectant there is. And the turmoil that will follow, on their side, will pave the way for US to get the White House back in '08.

9. I don't think Cheney's going to be there all that
much longer, and what if bush puts, say, George Allen in as VP? And don't tell me it would be easy to tar Allen or McCain with the same brush. Im of tow minds about impeachment proceedings. He deserves to be impeached but first they'd have to hold investigations, starting in 2007. By the time the investigations were completed, bush would have less than 18 months left to serve.

11. I posted these on DU a few days ago
One of the most positive steps Democrats could take now (while continuing to fight the B*sh Misadministration's misdeeds tooth and nail) is to make plans for undoing the damage done to America since 2001.

WHAT MUST WE DO TO RESTORE - OR IMPROVE - AMERICA WHEN WE REGAIN POWER?

1. I want to see new protections built in to prevent the Executive Branch from seizing undue power.

2. I want new measures to guarantee fair elections nationwide.

3. I want federal funds reallocated from billionaire tax cuts and corporate welfare to veterans, the poor, the sick, the elderly, the victims of disasters.

4. I want new, permanent protections for federal lands.

5. I want vast amounts of research and development money going into solar, wind and wave power as well as other renewable energy sources, with the goal of making this country independent of foreign oil.

6. I want media monopolies broken up, the Fairness Doctrine re-instituted, and free public service time required of every station in the US to allow candidates to share their views and debate.

7. I want to break down most of Homeland Security back into its many constituent agencies and subject it to intense GAO oversight.

8. I want to stop government money giveaways to religious groups, and strengthen and reaffirm the separation of church and state.

9. I want a federal living minimum wage.

10. I want excess profits of oil and pharmaceutical companies investigated, and if possible returned to America's consumers.

11. I also want new things, a Marriage Privacy Act that keeps government from intruding in marriages between consenting adults of any gender.
12. I want new diplomatic efforts to improve America's role in the world.
13. I want the US to sign the Kyoto accords.

This is by no means a complete list.

13. Impeachment first. Then the other stuff.
They owe it to us that Bush either gets impeached (with a Dem win in the House), or an impeachment attempt is made (if we don't retake the House. ugh).
