1. I don't remember anything about

the Patriot Act and a provision that would shut down the Judicial and Legislative Branches. The Patriot Act, however, did give sweeping powers to the President to act in wartime - more power we've seen since Nixon.

I believe the other Presidents doing wiretapping was an ignorant quote by Alberto Gonzales. In that quote Gonzales claimed that George Washington and others were legally justified in using electronic evesdropping, which of course is ludicrous since there was no NSA back then and no electronic technologies!! This was not aired on MTP I don't think, I saw it on another program.

Yes, It was a stupid statement by Gonzales. he was comparing to intercepting telegraph communication in the past.

Soomething was said on MTP this morning and I can't find a transcript yet....Anyone have one?

....in the hearings, Gonzalez used Washington and FDR as examples of other administrations. But what Gonzalez neglected to mention is that these examples do not apply since they occured BEFORE the FISA court was established.
