Please welcome another illegal program to the party!
via our friend Michael Smith...

"Donald Rumsfeld has built a secret US force to ‘take out’ Al-Qaeda – but Britain’s best are doing the spadework, writes Michael Smith
Donald Rumsfeld was never a man for diplomatic language. On July 1, 2002 in the early months of the global war on terror, the American defence secretary sent a two-line memo to Doug Feith, his under-secretary for policy, asking: “How do we organise the department for manhunts? We are obviously not well organised at the present time.”

<snip>

Rumsfeld now gave his special operations teams new orders. They were “to capture terrorists for interrogation or, if necessary, to kill them, not arrest them”. He also persuaded President Bush to sign a presidential finding authorising the military “to find and finish” terrorist targets.

<snip>

Rumsfeld had created a killer elite that has been compared favourably by one its key US architects, Lieutenant-General Jerry Boykin, with America’s highly controversial Phoenix programme, which secretly eradicated about 20,000 people without judicial process during the Vietnam war.

<snip>
Orthodox military commanders did not like it. In fact, the death of 18 US forces in Somalia in 1993 — in the Black Hawk Down incident — so traumatised US military chiefs that a virtual block was put on special operations missions despite the emergence of Bin Laden as an implacable foe."

2. I doubt the generals ended special ops because they were 'traumatised'
I doubt special ops was "blocked". Very strange conclusion.

8. IIRC, Richard Clarke mentioned in his book that the senior military

types resisted or were obstructionist when the Clinton Administration wanted to use special ops. (Then they spread the word that it was Clinton who was reluctant to act.) According to Clarke, the senior military types were extremely risk averse.

This will have a tough time rising above the multiple Cheney/buckshot threads.

Edit: Okay, NOW there is the R.

6. This is so scary.
These guys can not find a huge man on dialysis and we are expected to trust them to find terrorists and deal with them possibly killing them? Do you realize how many innocent people they have arrested and now they may just kill them? This makes me sad.

That's what I'm wondering too. How many innocent have they gotten with this? :\

19. Only thing is, Al Qaeda is not a large force.
Edited on Mon Feb-13-06 10:53 AM by Roland99
Most of the fighters killed in Afghanistan had NOTHING to do with Al Qaeda and certainly NOTHING to do with the 9/11 attacks. Most are just Islamist fighters who are fighting to install Islamic states in their own countries.

The Northern Alliance was being paid to turn over "terrorists" so anyone that looked Arab was rounded up and sent to the US military in return for compensation. They didn't care. As long as it was someone who was an enemy to *their* agenda....
