Any Texans here who recall when Georgie shot the Killdeer?
Seems as tho the goober-nah-tore-ial candidate had an image problem.
While he was seen as a spoiled, Eastern effete, Georgie's opponent Ann Richards was just the opposite.
Quintessential Texan and a mofo with a shotgun- a damned good shot at birds and clays alike.

So Karl dresses his boy in field duds (lipstick on a pig and totally out of his element) and sends him forth to go look manly on a dove hunt on Will Farish's (google that dude- real power) ranch.

Next day papers had the pic front page.
The dumbest looking guy on the planet carrying a damned KILLDEER by the feet.

I wish I knew how to post pics. A Killdeer in no way resembles a Mourning Dove in appearance or flight pattern.
And they were protected. Georgie's defense was that he thought he was shooting at a dove.

Wonder if that would work for me.

We were laughing our asses off back then.

Edit to add: Here's the story of the garbage truck incident:

"AUSTIN, Texas -- Gov. George W. Bush, the Republican presidential front-runner, sustained minor injuries to his right leg and hip Monday when he dived to avoid a garbage truck trailer that overturned near his jogging path.

Bush was treated at the scene and later traveled to New Hampshire for a scheduled campaign appearance, said his press secretary, Linda Edwards.

"If I needed to I could go out and run 3 miles," Bush said after arriving at the Berlin Airport in Milan, N.H.

Staff Sgt. Roscoe Hughey, a Texas Department of Public Safety agent who was accompanying Bush on a bicycle, received bruises on his left side, said department spokeswoman Tela Mange. Hughey, 39, was treated at Brackenridge Hospital and released, said hospital spokeswoman Stephanie Elsea."

1994

Hockley TX--September 2, 1994 Republican George W. Bush and Governor Ann Richards in an annual Texas ritual went dove hunting on the first day of the season with the press in tow.

Unfortunately, the GOP hopeful found out that one of the seven shots he fired off had hit and killed a federally protected killdeer. Recognizing he'd bagged the "wrong" bird, Bush admitted his mistake to the game warden and announced his desire to pay the fine.

"I thought it was a dove," Bush said, "I made a mistake and I'm going to pay for it." GW was fined $130 for shooting the bird with a 20-gauge shotgun during an hour long dove hunt in a field northwest of Houston.

13. God, I didn't know about that.
Killdeer run around really fast on the ground.

Doves have tiny legs and can hardly shuffle their chubby selves along. Kinda like Snarlin' Dick . . .

Damn these ijits . . .
