Embryonic stem cell segment on 60 Minutes
Edited on Mon Feb-13-06 07:53 AM by SHRED
Good show last night but my question(s) would have been:

Okay then...if the Bu$hites truly believe that an embryo should not be destroyed, and that it is a human, then why aren't they attempting to pass laws against discarding them? Where is their "courage of convictions"?

Thousands of embryos are getting old and therefore damaged by age.
Many couples choose to have them discarded. Yes, that is a legal option.

Yet the "pro-life" crowd remains steadfast in their sway over this administration to everyones detriment.
C'mon bushies...are you cowards?
Try passing a law that forbids discarding of embryos if you have feelings strong enough to keep vital research from us!

1. They admitted the WH 'adoption" program is not doing well. and the
solution is more education about the program.

People go to fertility clinics because they want there own biological babes--adopting is not in the cards for most.

2. Rep Rohrabacher used to be against stem cell research- he changed his mind
Can you guess why?

Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, R-Calif., said he is "adamantly against abortion," but he became a committed advocate for embryonic stem-cell research after his wife gave birth to triplets last year by way of in vitro fertilization. He now believes that "a fertilized egg is not a human being until it is implanted in a mother's womb."

"I hadn't thought it through too much before that," Rohrabacher said in an interview. "I'd have to say my personal experience had a lot to do with my position.... To say 'life begins at conception' - we have to realize that science now has made that phrase obsolete."

5. Yes, but only after he and his wife were able to have children
thanks to in vitro fertilization. He was staunchly against stem cell research before he and his wife had to make the decision to create a bunch of fertilized embryos to produce offspring.

Funny how these hypocrites are capable of an ounce of human empathy only after tragedy bites them in their own butts.

9. I get the feeling that lots of these anti-choice crusaders have abortions
in their closet. They never live by the rules they propose for others.

7. Frozen Embryo Orphanage Activities
Ah what to do for entertainment when you're frozen in a stew of inert materials and only .00067 mm tall?

Today's activities:

Have your test tube frozen in block of ice and visit penguin exhibit.
Rebel! Hang out dangerously close to the defrost element.
Mix things up. Rearrange your mitochondrial DNA according to feng shui principles.
Prepare for life after adoption my hanging out in a real family freezer next to the frozen peas.
Start saving for college.

10. NONE DARE CALL IT SNOWFLAKE
Edited on Mon Feb-13-06 09:14 AM by Gilligan
JEEZE SHRED...

But 9 out of 10 President Bush's say:
"Human life is a gift from our Creator and that gift should never be discarded, devalued or put up for sale,"

The president, who promotes something known as the “adoption option,” met last year with a group of parents and their children who owe their lives to couples who bequeathed them their leftover frozen embryos. AKA SNOWFLAKE BABIES...

NOT ONCE DID THAT TERM COME UP? WHY? CAUSE IT'S STUPID????

DID YOU ENJOY THE SELF RIGHTEOUS GEEK, ROBERT GEORGE, THUMPING HIS INVISIBLE BIBLE AND PROCLAIMING THAT A CLUMP OF 60 CELLS, A BLASTOCYST, POSSESSES THE SAME HUMAN DIGNITY AS A FULLY GROWN HUMAN...? I SAY TO MYSELF... WHAT THE HELL IS HE TALKING ABOUT?)

HERE IS THE TRANSCRIPT OF THE CONVERSATION BETWEEN LESLIE STAHL AND ROBERT GEORGE:

Asked why the embryos slated for destruction shouldn't be made available for research, George says, "The principle that the president laid down and which I support is one that says all human beings, irrespective of age or size or stage of development or condition of dependency, possess the same human dignity, because human dignity is inherent."

"Are you equating these embryos, these frozen embryos, with a full-grown man or woman?" Stahl asks.

"I’m saying they have the dignity of a human being, the way a full-grown man or woman has the dignity of a human being," he replies.

"And you’re equating them?" Stahl asks.

"Oh, sure," George says. "Yeah, I’m equating them in terms of human dignity."

What does he mean by "dignity"?

"I mean, shouldn’t simply be thrown out in the trash. Should be treated respectfully, the way we treat the remains of human beings at later stages of development," George explains.

"Like what? Like have burials?" Stahl asks.

"Buried or burned," George replies.

"You’re saying, take these little bunches of cells, and have burials for them?" Stahl asks.

-------------------------------------------------

Can I stop now????

What a pile of crap.

11. I was yelling at the TV last night when he said that decisions about
what to do with the excess embryos shouldn't be made by 'individuals' (those to whom the embryos belong) but by 'society' ...a.k.a. the American Taliban!

12. Yelling at the TV
I understand your frustration. I was pretty pissed off by that arrogant statement myself....

I find the thought of having "society" decide what I would or could do with a clump of my and my husbands DNA to be pretty damned laughable. But we are not dealing with rational, scientific minds.

What we have here is a failure to communicate...

How can any of us, who thinks beyond the next 10 minutes, relate to the pseudo science in BUSHLAND?

Look, they want to have a burial for the blastocyst instead of allowing them to be used to find cures for diseases.

Makes me proud to be an American.

13. Frozen Embryonic Orphan Funerals
Set scene: At the front of the church a tiny woodgrain coffin, about 9"x2". In chairs nearby, sealed vials sitting in styrofoam buckets of liquid nitrogen.

Dearly beloved;

We are gathered here today to pay our last respects to Wilson #0547 and celebrate it's sexually indeterminate life. Wilson #0547 did not have an easy life. Wilson #0547 was never very tall, didn't speak very well and never really got to know it's parents. Wilson #0547 was always the last embryo chosen for the basketball team. Despite all of these setbacks, never once did anyone hear Wilson #0547 complain.
