when the gentleman was admitted to the hospital. It was 24 hours before the press got wind of it. Medical privacy laws kept the hospital from releasing it to the press until the Whittingtons approved.

11. The problem is, medical privacy rules forbade the docs from releasing info

ABOUT him, his condition, his name etc. unless he authorized them to.

However, the SHOOTING is another matter. First, and I know you ER docs and nurses will let me know if I am wrong about this, but:

1. If a patient arrives at the hosptial via private conveyance and has been SHOT - the hospital MUST call the police

2. If a person has been shot and an ambulance or medic is on the scene, they MUST contact the police

They could have refused to release the name of the victim, but CHENEY was never protected by ANY law, executive, federal or otherwise. And for the local police to withhold this most likely violates their rules as well. No WAY this went out over cop or paramedic channels or the press WOULD have gotten wind of it...they monitor that stuff and rush to every shooting
