Third hunter revealed in Cheney hunting party

Ron Brynaert
Published: February 13, 2006

Armstrong gave this account of the accident:

Whittington, Cheney and Willeford saw two coveys on the ground, one directly in front of them, with dogs on point, and the other 100 or so yards to the left.

"The idea was to shoot the first, then for the group to move ahead and shoot the second covey," Armstrong said.

After Whittington shot the two birds, he moved away to look for them. He had trouble locating one, so he told the group to move ahead.

Cheney and Willeford moved to the second covey. Unbeknownst to either of them, Armstrong said, Whittington had walked back near the group and was about 30 yards to the right of the vice president when Cheney fired at birds emerging from the covey.

Willeford added that the sun was behind Whittington, possibly making him difficult to see.

The Honorable Pamela Willeford was sworn in as U.S. Ambassador to Switzerland and Liechtenstein on October 27, 2003. A close personal friend of the first lady, who was present at her swearing in, Ambassador Willeford chaired the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board for the last five years, served as a trustee of St. Andrews Episcopal School in Austin as well as being involved in numerous other civic organizations. The Ambassador grew up in Breckenridge, Texas, and graduated from the University of Texas at Austin. She is married and has two adult children.

REG's Ruby Wilson opened the 30th anniversary of the Bern Switzerland International Jazzfest in March 2005 to glowing reviews and adoring crowds.

Performing in the world-famous Marian's Jazzroom in the Swiss capital -- where greats from Dizzy Gillespie to B.B. King have played -- Ruby packed two shows nightly with her hand-picked band of top Memphis musicians: Phillip Coleman, Marcus Hullette, Nathaniel Holleyman, and Raishene Webb.

Bern is Switzerland's most musically sophisticated city, and Ruby wowed the standing-room-only crowds with a potent mix of Memphis blues, jazz, and R&B. Only Ruby could turn chestnuts like "Mustang Sally" and "Brickhouse" into hot jazz pieces, challenging herself and her band nightly to deliver inventive, improvisational takes on Memphis classics.

3. It does seem odd. Two women and two men in this hunting party
and neither is married to each other. Sounds like the typical English Houseparty weekend where folks sort of "swap around." Where was Lynn?

It could mean nothing. Perhaps her husband was there but the article seems to say she was hunting with Cheney.

I wonder if that's the reason they didn't release the story for so long. It looks a little odd and even though it might be innocent wouldn't those Right Wing Fundies get their knickers in a knot that Cheney was out there not just "with the guys" but with the "guys and gals."

Might be more on that angle...for scandal if anyone carried it further...

:wtf:

If a guy is blocking the sun within 30 yards of you...how the hell do you not see him?

5. If they had dogs on point...
why would Whittington go in search of the two birds he killed? And wouldn't Whittington's first shot have caused all quail in the area to fly at the same time?

8. Willeford and the stolen pistol

From left to right -- Assistant Secretary Michael Garcia, U.S. Ambassador Pamela P. Willeford; CEO of RUAG Lan Systems, Stephan Kocher; and Chief of Criminal Investigations, Bern State Police, Florian Wasler.

Kocher is holding the recovered pistol. Maybe Pamela should take Cheney's away.

From the press release:

BERN, SWITZERLAND– At a ceremony here today with Swiss government officials, Michael J. Garcia, the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Assistant Secretary for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), announced the official opening of the new ICE Attaché office in Switzerland. During the ceremony, Garcia also returned to Switzerland a rare, 106-year-old, Luger pistol that had been stolen from a Swiss museum in 1996 and was recently recovered by ICE agents in the United States. source: PDF at http://www.ice.gov/graphics/news/newsreleases/articles/luger_020604.pdf
