Pastor airs problem with MySpace.com

Valley Bible Fellowship leader warns parents against online forum popular with kids, teens

Is MySpace.com just another front for, say, MySatan.com?

That's the view of Ron Vietti, senior pastor of Valley Bible Fellowship in east Bakersfield.

Vietti used Sunday's three services to deliver an hourlong attack against the evils of Internet social Web site MySpace.com and how it is "worse than crack, cocaine or meth." The senior pastor said the popular Web site lures young boys into pornography and sets up young girls as victims of sexual predators.

"You say I'm mad -- you bet I'm mad!" he said to the capacity crowd during the 11:30 a.m. service, as congregants in the crowd hollered "Amens" and "Yeahs."

MySpace.com, according to The Associated Press, has two-and-a-half times the traffic of Google.com, with over 50 million users according to some estimates. The free site -- which uses advertising to make money -- allows people to create personal Web pages to talk to friends, write their own blogs or meet new friends.

4. Go Amish - it's the only safe way
Why don't these folks just give up on this world and live like the Amish? They'd have fewer problems and would reduce their blood pressure.

5. He's nuts, but MySpace has a lot of security problems
It's a magnet for underage girls and the men who like them.

6. Perhaps parents should educate their children of the dangers...
There is also good that comes out of this website, especially for growing musicians.

15. There's The Problem! Nailed it!
along with some supervision of what their children are doing on the net!

MySpace.com is a great place for budding musicians (or growing) and it is probably a bad place for a child to explore without adult supervision or knowing where your kids are going on the net!

I guess that part of the problem is that technology grows faster than parents awareness of what is out there, and kids get it fast.

Sure there are problems with any web site that has forums, etc. NBC did it's expose on trapping men who pursue young boys and girls at chatrooms, and did it 3 times! Unbelievable that some of these folks came back for seconds after they had been caught once.

And the internet is loaded with porn, MySpace.com or not, and if parents check their children's surfing, or install software to block porn then there is less chance of that being a problem.

As for Satan? If there is a Satan, he probably thrives on the fear that the good (maybe) minister preaches about from his pulpit.

7. *groan* Another black eye for Bakersfield
Not all of us residents of Bakersfield are religious rightwing Taliban types.

Just most of them.

This guy stayed up from 10pm to 6am looking at the web site.

My guess is that he was trolling for little boys, couldn't get one to talk to him and then decided it was evil.

11. All of the outlying areas are more fundie
Kernville, Wasco, Arvin, etc.

Not many of my neighbors are fundies, and the ones who are don't preach when we get together.
