60 Previously Unpublished Photos From Abu Ghraib To be Broadcast
The photos America doesn't want seen

February 15, 2006

MORE photographs have been leaked of Iraqi citizens tortured by US soldiers at the notorious Abu Ghraib prison on the outskirts of Baghdad.

http://smh.com.au/ffximage/2006/02/15/abughraib1_wideweb__470x306,0.jpg

Tonight the SBS Dateline program plans to broadcast about 60 previously unpublished photographs that the US Government has been fighting to keep secret in a court case with the American Civil Liberties Union.

Although a US judge last year granted the union access to the photographs following a freedom-of-information request, the US Administration has appealed against the decision on the grounds their release would fuel anti-American sentiment.

Some of the photos are similar to those published in 2004, others are different. They include photographs of six corpses, although the circumstances of their deaths are not clear. There are also pictures of what appear to be burns and wounds from shotgun pellets.

The executive producer of Dateline, Mike Carey, said he was showing the pictures leaked to his program because it was important people understood what had happened at Abu Ghraib.

Our government is in possession of pics and videos that a judge demanded to be released months ago, and they have stalled releasing them.
The victims deserve their story being told.

I hate the evil warmongering POS's running my country!!!!!

33. Guards used "pellet guns"
That explains why the Crashcart shooting incident is being portrayed as a "pellet gun" incident instead of a "shotgun" incident.

The sick injustices and corruption of this administration will not cease until they are held accountable by the American people. These photos may just be enough to finally push the American people into demanding accountability from this criminal regime.

17. Australian current affairs show
Edited on Tue Feb-14-06 11:35 AM by Hissyspit
http://news.sbs.com.au/dateline/index.php?page=about

ABOUT DATELINE

Dateline, which began in 1984, is Australia's longest-running international current affairs program. It has a well-earned reputation for authoritative and incisive reporting.

Fronted by one of Australia's best known television journalists, George Negus, Dateline also boasts a line-up of experienced reporters - winning many international and domestic awards for excellence in journalism.

In 2000 Dateline took the traditional way of producing TV current affairs and turned it on its head. Reporters who used to travel with a cameraperson and sound recordist now travel alone and have the responsibility of both filming and reporting their stories. The reporters became video-journalists or VJs, gaining access to people and places that the conventional camera crews cannot.

Dateline provides a wide range of reports from around the world, focusing on international issues. From economics to conflict, from the environment to technology, from politics to global trends - Dateline offers a window to the world and Australia's place in it.

10. There's more. I think Hersch talked about rape tapes
Seymour Hersch said there were tapes of a girl being raped in order to elicit information from her brother who was a detainee kept in the next cell and forced to listen to the rape.

The US has those tapes.

I haven't seen much about it in the news since a court decision a while back that airing the tapes would put our armed forces at further risk.

That bullshit of "we're making the world safer", is coming to an end. We have spent five years working on ending this nightmare.

Of course, it will be censored. Only the "nice" photos will be released. We won't know the true horrors until we begin interviewing Iraqis, someday.

21. Hopefully, all this horror will finally be exposed..but I gotta tell you,
after hustling my 9-year-old from the room last night during the news, which was merrily rolling footage of British soldiers beating Iraqi civilians, I've had ENOUGH of being ashamed of my country. My son said 'it looks like they're beating KIDS, why would they do that?'...and I just burst into tears; I truly didn't know what to say.
This is NOT OUR United States of America, anymore, and we need to take it back.
Let's let the whole world see what these monsters have been doing, and then try to pick up the pieces of our once-great country and move on....after sending the whole crooked lot to The Hague, of course.

36. I'm really sorry your son saw this
But it's not too early, even at age 9, to begin to inculcate a respect for others in your son. When we reduce other human beings to caricatures, labeling them as "the enemy" or "terrorists" or "communists" or whatever, the tags obscure the fact that this is another person that we're talking about. And when you're so obsessed with watching out for enemies, even kids start to look like bad guys after awhile.

23. I don't really want to see these pictures myself, but the only way
to force this administration to take responsibility for the crimes that they have committed is to bring them to public light. It seems ludicrous to me that only "a few bad apples" have been courtmartialed for these crimes. This has probably created more insurgents than anything else that has been done in Iraq.

all the crap that the US military is doing over there -

The timing of this seems like it adds one more layer of outrage to ramp up the war with Iran. So many things for the Muslims and Arabs to be disgusted about.

It would be great if the release of the photos encouraged Americans to put an end to our imperialism. Unfortunately - I'm not that optimistic.

...why did the White House sit on these photos for so long without prosecuting these other people? I mean, these are photos the WH has had for some time, right? The pictures will come out, there'll be a brouhaha, and the WH will start prosecuting low-level grunts again. But, if they've had these photos all along, why wait until they're made public to take action?

Once it airs, there will be no way to stop it. Not on the internets. There will be torrents aplenty. Not only that, but the Aussie production company will surely make copies available to US media, for a fee. 60 Minutes, Dateline NBC, and others will be dying to get their hands on this.

And thank you to whoever gave me the heart, I appreciate it.

65. I'm becoming so very cynical
I'm beginning to wonder if anything will turn it around - the media shuts its eyes, the right-wing says, "Hey, it's just like college pranks," and all the while, I get sicker and sicker and the world looks at us and wonders why all of us who are supposed to be "free Americans" don't do anything.

I'm almost past hope that it will ever end. Not quite yet, but it won't take too much more of this administration getting by with everything for me to decide to just go into hiding and hope for the best.

WASHINGTON - When President Bush last week signed the bill outlawing the torture of detainees, he quietly reserved the right to bypass the law under his powers as commander in chief.

70. Hmmmm, American friends, why was this taken up by
our (Aust.) TV first? You have media of your own don't you.... why didn't your outlets get or broadcast this stuff? And it's happened before, the U.S. defiling corpses (Can't remember the details but I think it was burning them facing Mecca) in Afghanistan was broadcast by dateline too. Now I think about it, why dateline? None of the other shows broadcast that stuff.
In Australia, that's because the prev. unbiased channel now self censors to avoid claims of lw bias, and the commercial stations all want some laws changed so they suck up to the gov't.
What about you?

73. our mainstream media
has consolidated until all the major outlets are owned by a very few people... For instance, NBC is owned by General Electric, who's income is substantially from armaments and military contracts...

Before the consolidations were endemic, however, they self censored like yours, to avoid (largely false) claims of left wing bias. News and "opinion" got so badly blurred that it was hard to tell when you were listening to what were supposed to be facts..

This sorry state of affairs has accelerated to the point that actual news now exists primarily in cyberspace.

85. New 'Abu Ghraib abuse' images screened
New 'Abu Ghraib abuse' images screened

Mark Oliver
Wednesday February 15, 2006

Previously unpublished images showing the apparent abuse of detainees at Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison in 2003 were broadcast today by an Australian television station.
Still and video images were broadcast on Dateline, a current affairs programme on SBS television, which appeared to show dead Iraqis and detainees being tortured by US troops.

In one piece of footage an Iraqi prisoner was seen slamming his head repeatedly into a metal door. A still image showed a naked detainee with multiple injuries to his buttocks. There was also film of naked male prisoners being forced to masturbate in front of a camera.

Some of the new images showed US soldiers who have already been convicted over the abuse scandal at the prison, which is just outside Baghdad, including Private Lynndie England and Charles Graner.

The original photographs of abuse - which included an image of a hooded prisoner with electric wires attached to their arms and piles of naked detainees arranged in "pyramids" - caused worldwide outrage when they were leaked to US current affairs programme 60 Minutes in 2004.

For its programme today, Dateline interviewed US Congress members who had been given a private viewing of all the images depicting abuse from Abu Ghraib, some of which have previously not been published by the media.

There were reports today that the US government was trying to prevent the new images being broadcast in the US.

REPORTER: Olivia Rousset

These are the photos the American Government doesn't want you to see. While researching a story on guards at Abu Ghraib, I obtained a copy of the unreleased photographs and videos. Taken at the same time as the photos released in 2004 and often of the same abuses, this is the first time they have been shown to the public.

AMRIT SINGH, LAWYER, AMERICAN CIVIL LIBERTIES UNION: We hope that the release of these photographs will bring about further pressure to hold high-ranking officials accountable for what we now know to have been systemic and widespread abuse occurring throughout Iraq, Afghanistan and Guantanamo Bay.

American Civil Liberties Union lawyer Amrit Singh has not seen the photos. The ACLU has taken the Department of Defense to court to force the release of these pictures under the Freedom of Information Act.

AMRIT SINGH: The government has taken the position that the conduct of US soldiers depicted in these photographs is so egregious that the American public cannot have a right to it.
So it is a bizarre position, from our point of view, obviously, because the Freedom of Information Act, under which we are seeking these photographs, is precisely the legislation that was enacted so that the public could find out what its government is up to.

92. 21 Retired Generals Sign Petition to Stop Torture
http://ga4.org/campaign/prisonerabuse
Stop Blaming the Troops -- Investigate the Real Culprits of Abuse

Join 12,646 Americans in signing this petition!

The time has come to investigate the Bush Administration's role in the prisoner abuse and humiliation that has motivated our enemies in the war on terror and endangers the well-being of our fighting forces...
===
As a retired general and strategic intelligence officer, I am deeply concerned about the White House's commitment to upholding Senator John McCain's ban on torture. And because you helped fight for this important amendment, I wanted to let you know how it has been threatened.

The day Congress passed Senator McCain's anti-torture amendment - December 22 - was a momentous one. Congress reaffirmed that it is illegal for U.S. personnel - whether it's the military, the CIA, or anyone else - to engage in cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment of detainees. Your hard work and the work of Human Rights First was key to making this happen.

However, in a disturbing statement issued by the White House when the bill was signed, the President essentially claimed the right to bypass the law and authorize illegal interrogation tactics - torture - when he sees fit. The statement asserts that "he executive branch shall construe in a manner consistent with the constitutional authority of the President to supervise the unitary executive branch and as Commander in Chief."

This is code language. It means the President can override laws passed by Congress if he thinks they impede his power as Commander in Chief. It is exactly the same argument that was used in the infamous "torture memo" from the Justice Department. That's what led to the abuse of detainees in the first place.

This "signing statement" by the President undermines the law that Congress overwhelmingly supported. There should be no exceptions to this law. If Sen. McCain's torture ban is not fully enforced in practice, we will not be able to prevent further abuses or repair our reputation abroad.

Today, I joined 20 other retired generals and admirals in a letter to the President, urging him to forcefully implement this new law. I've pasted a copy below. You can read Human Rights First's own letter to the President by clicking here (warning PDF file):

http://www.humanrightsfirst.info/pdf/06112-etn-hrf-mccain-letter-bush.pdf

I taught prisoner interrogation and military law for the Army Intelligence School for 18 years. I can tell you that prior to the war in Iraq, torture has never been allowed by the Army, and as an interrogation tool it is never the answer. There is no evidence that it produces reliable information. It only serves to undermine our nation's values and our national security.

The U.S. has paid a heavy price for its misdirected torture policies - we cannot allow our government to make excuses and make a mockery of Sen. McCain's ban on torture.

Thank you for joining me in support of Human Rights First's efforts to end all torture and abuse in America’s name.

Sincerely,

Brigadier General David R. Irvine (USA, Ret.)

January 12, 2006

The Honorable George W. Bush
President of the United States
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW
Washington, DC 20500

Dear President Bush:

We write to thank you for publicly endorsing Senator McCain's amendment on the treatment of detainees in U.S. custody, and for signing it into law. The new law, implemented and enforced in accordance with Congressional intent, will ensure that the United States has a single standard for interrogating enemy prisoners that is effective, lawful, and humane. The primary reason we strongly supported Senator McCain's effort is that we believe this law, if effectively and forcefully implemented, will help protect our troops in Iraq and elsewhere, now and in the future.

Past abuses have damaged military discipline, put American military personnel at greater risk, undermined U.S. intelligence gathering efforts, and greatly harmed America's image around the world. It is incumbent on you as President and Commander-in-Chief to ensure that all senior members of your administration speak with a consistent voice to make clear that the United States now has a single standard of conduct specified in law that governs all interrogations, regardless of the legal status or the location of the detainee being interrogated.

Accountability and deterrence have never been more important to end all torture and abuse in America's name, and thereby restore America' reputation in the world. This long overdue corrective action will require strong leadership from you and others in positions of authority.

Mr. President, we welcome your attention to this issue and stand ready to assist in any way we can to ensure the effective implementation of this new law. Clear and unambiguous implementation will help ensure that our brave men and women in uniform will never again feel that to prevail against the enemy they must risk their honor or the values they fight to protect.

Sincerely,
