Lest we forget. Cheney has a rap sheet of DUI's
http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/cheney_doc.html

Vice President Dick Cheney, on the other hand, could actually argue that his two DWIs came when he was young and reckless.

Court and police records obtained by The Smoking Gun show that Cheney was convicted of drunk driving twice during an eight-month period in the early 1960s in his home state of Wyoming. The two convictions came when Cheney was 21 and 22 and resulted in fines and a brief suspension of his driver's license.

On November 2, in the wake of the Bush DWI discovery, a Cheney spokesperson told reporters that the vice presidential candidate also had a rap sheet. But the Bush-Cheney campaign refused to provide any further details about the DWI busts. So TSG will now handle that chore.

Cheney first privately disclosed the arrests in 1989, after he had been nominated for Secretary of Defense. According to an account in Bob Woodward's "The Commanders," Cheney told members of the Senate Armed Services committee about the DWI arrests during a closed confirmation hearing. Cheney told the senators that he believed it would be best to publicly disclose the busts. But Armed Services committee members said there was no need for the disclosure and subsequently confirmed Cheney in a 20-0 vote. ...

7. How could it be? It was the next day before it was reported!
By the hostess. To a local paper.

3. Its an excellent point
but can Cheney drink while taking so many heart medications or whatever else Cheney is on? Does not seem plausible

6. Many alcoholics can't stop drinking despite heart trouble
Just saying.

I do believe Cheney kept smoking after his first attacks.

17. Usually it just gives you a lower tolerance for alcohol
My Dad takes blood thinners and all sorts of drugs because he has 95% blockage in both the big arteries in his neck. He still drinks alcohol, but can only have 1 or 2 manhattans or he would pass out.

8. Well it needs to be reported first.
Unless the report is delayed to give the shooter time to dry out.

10. Cheney just seems from the generation where drinking was more prevalent
I know he's actually no older than Bush, but he seems more of an earlier generation when a coupla manhattans in the happy hour was normal. I can easily picture him with a few pops before going out hunting.

11. You missed the 'fun' earlier today, didn't you?
Where DUers were told we were "farkin fools" and should "SHUT UP" about Darth and possible alcohol involvement in the shooting. Ah, good times. Goooooooooood times. :eyes:

12. This says a lot.
I've been thinking about his dwi's for a while now. Let me just say that I had a dwi back in the early 80's. It was HUGE! It changed my life, totally. It destroyed me. I stopped drinking. I stopped driving. I stopped everythng. I withdrew. And to this day, whenever I meet or hear of someone who has more than one dwi, I think they have a real problem. Either a drinking problem, or an authority problem. I know which one Cheney has. Maybe he still drinks. But one thing occured to me, and that is he most likely didn't report the accident immediately because of alcohol. He's no dummy. And I would bet anything that he still drinks.

Two tickets in that short a period is a significant indication that he has major issues.

13. So could this latest incident be a 3rd strike?
I sincerely hope Mr. Whittington fully recovers.

If he dies, however, this could be a felony (according to another DU post).

I would never wish for bad things to happen to Mr. Cheney...my only hope is that he gets what he deserves.

19. If that old bat, Armstong, said "there may have been a beer
or two for lunch,"you know Cheney was probably kneewalking drunk when he went hunting. Anytime the cops pull over someone for DWI, the driver always swears they only had a couple of beers. Ms Armstrong spilled the beans.

21. I wonder who would drink more before a gunfight, Cheney or Doc Holliday
I can just see Cheney acting out a scene from Tombstone as he staggers in the direction of Whittington: "That's okay. I have two barrels. One for each of you."
