Picture of paper target shot with .28 gauge shotgun...

with birdshot at 30 yards...

That's a LOT of damned "pepper," isn't it!

This pic is from this article:

The birdshot and the damage done
If you're unclear on the kind of damage that a 28-gauge shotgun can do, the paper that first reported on Dick Cheney's shooting of Harry Whittington has some visual help for you. A photographer for the Corpus Christi Caller-Times has simulated the accident by firing his own 28-gauge shotgun, loaded with birdshot, at a paper target 30 yards away -- the same distance that is said to have separated Cheney from Whittington when the vice president pulled the trigger. The result is up for viewing here: ("here" takes you to pic above)

3. I don't doubt those results, BUT
That target assums a direct hit, and it's PAPER!

I'm having a very hard time with 7 1/2 shot penetrating a shirt, probably a hunting coat, and a vest, and still penetrating this guy's chest! What's wrong with this picture????

Something's very wrong with the 30 ft story here!

4. lots of different units floating around, people need to be careful....
Edited on Tue Feb-14-06 08:54 PM by mike_c
30 ft = 10 yards
30 yards = 90 ft
90 yards = 270 ft

I've seen posts and media quotes of 30 ft, 30 yds, and 90 yds.

BTW, SI units would solve this confusion. I mean, no one is going to confuse 30 m with 30 cm or 30 km!

5. Oh, yeah....I agree with that....
Edited on Tue Feb-14-06 09:01 PM by rateyes
there's more to this story...but at 30 yards....half of the shells contents, the accounts say, actually hit the guy.....so take half those holes, and put Whittington closer....the guy is in a lot worse shape than being peppered. I hope he doesn't die, and I ALMOST feel sorry that Cheney (or anyone else) would have to live with the guilt. But, the truth needs to be told.

6. of course they're lying about SOMETHING-- they lie reflexively....
It's the one thing you can always count on from the Bush/Cheney cabal-- if their lips are moving, they're lying.

7. You're right. I bet it was point blank - less than 20 feet away
Edited on Tue Feb-14-06 09:16 PM by Cronus Protagonist
Judging from the investigator's report of the pellet distribution being in a tight circle about 1-2 feet in diameter. We all know they're lying. The only question is what about, and the distance is clearly one of the lies.
