Why the Cheney shooting is a story:
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- If the vice president shot a man in the forest, would we hear about it?

Apparently a day later.

Well, it was more like a field than a forest, but you get the point. (Watch why secrecy has been Cheney's modus operandi -- 1:43)

Last Saturday, while out hunting quail, Vice President Dick Cheney accidentally shot one of his hunting partners. The victim was Harry Whittington, a prominent lawyer and Cheney friend from Austin, Texas.

1. Close But Not Quite There
The Cheney story is where it is because the DC press corps are furious they didn't get the scoop.

For the rest of us, it's a story because it's a remarkable analogy for the Iraq war. Cheney went off half-cocked and didn't see information he didn't really want to see. After he bungled it, he didn't want to give out information he didn't want anyone else to see.

4. And the arrogance, the lying, the spinning, the dismissive attitude,
the rudeness, the blame-the-victim stance are all metaphors for the administration from Day One. And just the fact that Cheney is out car hunting pen-raised tame birds tells you everything you need to know about him.

8. More like Cheney made up a buncha shit to justify doing what he wanted
to do anyway.

3. It's not the reckless hunting practice - -It's the cover-up.

Any careless hunter can unintentionally wound a hunting partner. It's not tremendously common but it happens every year.

It takes a conspiratorial mind to coordinate the use of government staff and a security detachment to hide it from public view and lie about it.

6. I think it's the callousness in which Cheney is handling it
to him Wittington is collateral damage while on his hunting trip. He really doesn't give a rat's ass about anything human.
