***OFFICIAL C-Span Katrina Hearings: Chertoff testimony Thread, Part 2***
Edited on Wed Feb-15-06 02:28 PM by Wordie
The hearings have been going on for a while. First thread is here:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=364x427965

This is really important. Please recommend it. If it gets on the Greatest page, more people will know about it and be able to watch.

8. Accountablity
I have not been able to watch all of this. Does anyone know if the panel has asked Chertoff as head of homeland security and brownies boss what his level of accountability is.

4. I can't watch it. I watched for a while, realized that Jerkoff was never
...going to answer anything and 'puke apologists were going to make excuses for everything - I couldn't stomach it. I turned it off.

Edited on Wed Feb-15-06 01:37 PM by Mr_Spock
Amazing that this buffoon can still have his position after going to bed unaware of the levee breaches that happened 14 hours prior when his office was personally notified by the Coast Guard.

...and the Repukes can't keep their tongues far enough up his ass!!

Amazing, simply amazing!!

Chertoff said something about why additional resources weren't mobilized...didn't catch it. Almost sounded as if he said they weren't needed!

asking about provision that says that a person is named PFO (essentially the lead person in a disaster), that the PFO has to suspend all other duties. Major person in chain of command has just said he was completely unaware of this aspect of the NRP...

12. Did you catch the comment by C that "we have to face the fact
that the Fed Gov't is never going to be able to handle something like this. It must be the responsibility of State & Local Gov't to do the work on the ground. We can provide things from our stockpiles, and get them to airports, but it is up to the locals to get them distributed!"

Hmmm, is he dismissing activating Coast Guard rescue, and military airlifting when needed????

25. Lautenberg (D-NJ) asking some pointed questions on why certain things
didn't get done. Good!

Chertoff always sounds like he is giving good answers, but the content is empty.

26. Just an advance warning...I won't be able to post the official thread #3..
I've PM'd Viva and the mods, to see if they would like to take over, but no response yet.

Anybody want to volunteer to be the back up, to post the new thread? This would be just in case we don't hear from them by the time this thread gets up to 100 replies?

33. Lieberman...
Is that it? They're saying any other questions are to be submitted in writing. Report with findings and recommendations to be prepared and released later.

Lieberman now talking, stressing non-partisan nature of the inquiry. Criticising "fog of war" term as applied to the Katrina response. Saying Chertoff should have known. He had the capability, but it wasn't used well.

Great!

32. Not publicly. Seems C has to testify at a House hearing at 2PM.
Great tactic if you can make it work, huh? Make sure you limit your questioning by saying you have to be somewhere else!!!!

34. But Lieberman questioning now.
Edited on Wed Feb-15-06 02:12 PM by Wordie
Saying that when Rita was coming, Chertoff led a successful pre-hurricane effort, which is what Katrina should have been.

I was surprised at such a critical approach from Lieberman. I would have expected him to go easy on Chertoff.

Are we now taken to a different hearing about Katrina???

Looks like it! Who are these people? LOL

C-Span says this is the Select Katrina Response Investigation Committee. This is more like it, a blistering indictment of Katrina response from Rep. Tom Davis, the Cmte. Chair.

This is the House, the previous was the Senate investigation.

37. C-span just changed to airing the House hearings...
I think Chertoff will have to testify here, that may be why he had to leave the Senate hearing.

I changed the threads title, but I hope that people won't miss it because they think it's over. Want to start a new thread???
