now he tells us - NYT public editor on media cheerleading for war
Daneil Okrent, former public editor for the NY Times, tells a Williams College this:

“The general rolling over on the part of the American press allowed the war to happen. I do believe that is true, and I think the press is extremely chastened by that. I think we all know how bad it was.”

Too bad he didn't realize it then, back when we were all screaming about it and dismissed as lunatics and terrorists.

1. Boy, is that a misleading headline!
I thought it meant that Okrent was on TV advocating we go into Iran or something.

2. This is the guy who took 5 weeks off during the 2004 election. A tool!
I just can't stand him. He's such a hypocrite. He's probably trying to cover his ass when all the filthy detailsi of the NYT publichser and editor's betrayal of America comes out.

We'll see but Okrent is a total loser.

4. No doubt
Blaming "the press" makes it sounds like how the republicans do with the Abramoff deal. "Everyone was a part of it!"

I only know him from his baseball writing. Sorry to hear he's such a tool in real life.

Similar to James Lileks, I guess. Entertaining writer, but a RW weasel.

3. They don't know it now.
The NYT is still providing cover for Bush's illegal spying.

6. And they didn't bother to stop covering for Bushboy before the election
and THAT is a matter of record, too.

Imagine, withholding the NSA wiretapping - a crime against the Constitution - to protect a president during an election year.

13. They didn't just roll over.
Like you said, they were actively cheering for the war. I remember stories about the innate beauty of bombings and the romance of war. They went out of their way to sell war to the people. Even so, the people never bought it. Rarely reported was the statistic that the majority of the population thought we shouldn't invade Iraq.
