Description: This week on After Words, journalist David Rieff explains why he now believes that armed intervention should only be used as a last resort. His argument is explained in "At the Point of a Gun: Democratic Dreams and Armed Intervention." Mr. Rieff remains a supporter of intervening militarily during both the Rwandan and Bosnian Genocide, but further atrocities in the aftermath of both conflicts led him to reconsider the argument for outside military force as the only solution to solving humanitarian crisis's caused by the governments of sovereign states. He also writes about the complicated positions human rights advocates take on intervention, and concludes that world leaders should resist using interventionism as a standard doctrine in international policy. He is interviewed by Gen. Wesley Clark (Ret.), former Democratic Presidential Candidate, NATO Allied Supreme Commander, who led the military operation in Kosovo, and the editor of Palgrave Macmillan's "Great Generals Series."

Taming American Power: The Global Response of U.S. Primacy
Stephen Walt

Stephen Walt outlines the different ways countries around the world, friends and foes alike, are currently resisting American power. He argues that if the U.S. wants to achieve its national security goals and preserve its primacy in the world, it will have to change its foreign policy. This would include, he says, a repudiation of the 2002 National Security Strategy (which allows for pre-emptive attacks) and a greater reliance on public diplomacy. The talk was hosted by the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, DC. Includes Q&A.

Stephen Walt is a professor of international affairs at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government. His other books include "Revolution and War" and "The Origins of Alliances."

From 1971 to 1981 John Perkins worked as a chief economist for Chas. T. Main, a Massachusetts-based international strategic consulting firm. During this time Mr. Perkins said his job was to trick developing countries into taking enormous loans from the World Bank in order to construct or repair their domestic infrastructure. These loans were given with the understanding that these countries would then use those loans to pay U.S. corporations to complete these constructing and engineering projects. The author writes that when these developing countries were eventually unable to pay off these sizable debts, the United States, World Bank, or IMF would step in and control the country's security arrangements and budgetary structure.

John Perkins is the author of six books including "The World Is As You Dream It" and "Psychonavigation." He is the founder of the non-profit organization Dream Change, a grass roots movement intent on raising consciousness and creating sustainable lifestyles throughout the world.

Stealing God's Thunder: Benjamin Franklin's Lightning Rod and the Invention of America
Philip Dray

Author Philp Dray speaks about his new book, "Stealing God's Thunder: Benjamin Franklin's Lightning Rod and the Invention of America" at the Old South Meeting House in Boston, Massachusetts, the birthplace of Ben Franklin. Mr. Dray uses slides to accompany his talk as he expounds on the life of one of America's Founding Fathers and the period in which he lived. The discussion focuses primarily on Ben Franklin's invention of the lightning rod and his revelation of the mysterious workings of lightning and thunder - studies that made him one of the foremost scientists of his day. Mr. Dray explores the importance of Franklin's discoveries in America as it emerged as a new country and his battles for recognition and respect from the world of science.

That sentence works two ways. :hi:

And speaking of "sentence", I hear you really know your way around the legal system.

I've seen that interview, she had a lot of interesting facts to offer on a variety of women. Very charming, worth tuning in for.

Al and tipper sure know how to raise'em. (She also addresses her mother's old campaign to get parental warning labels on music. :-) )

She also wrote for the animated "Futurama" and SNL.

68. She wrote for the Harvard Lampoon, too.
'One audience member asked the former Harvard Lampoon writer if she worked on the "Saturday Night Live" television episode her father hosted. Yes, she said, she worked on that episode. She also has written for several television shows, including "Futurama."'

So apparently she worked on just that one episode of SNL with her father.
