Larisa Alexandrovna does poetry, too
If you didn't know, DU's lala_rawraw, who is also Larisa Alexandrovna of Raw Story, wears a third hat as a poet as well. Go see what she's done now . . . here's a bit of it:
You cannot press me silent
Bruiser, because I don't have
Enough flags attached to my house,
Or because I don't like your lists and eyes
On lists, or threaten fists against
Me if I won't sit still.

It's up at Larisa's blog at Huffington Post:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/larisa-alexandrovna/speaking-to-jingoman_b_15893.html

And also at Mick Smith's blog at the London Times:

1. More poetry, rather than less, would be a powerful lift for U.S.

public life.

I'm not exactly holding my breath waiting for any from the lips of DimSon. Or Uncle Dick, or Kindasleazy, or that evil ninny Don Rumsfeld.

Former Sec. of Defense William Cohen is a good poet. Former Sen. Eugene McCarthy not bad either. And several others.

Language should lift and inspire, not deceive and tear down. Bravo and hurray for Ms. Alexandrovna.

2. K & R for Larisa's poetry. Now I have an inkling of one of her strategies
for keeping her sanity amid all the horrors she reports.

And she shares it with us.

Thank you, Larisa!

6. thank you, if only people actually read poetry
anymore... the oldest form of recording history, expressing thoughts and feelings, and so forth. we need a new Romantic revolution on par with Shelley and the gang.:)

12. You have the right of it, LaLa! Our age - we - need it badly.

Beauty can't be shrink-wrapped or regimented. Too many people don't even know what the essense of poetry IS. Even less do they recognize their own need for it.

If of thy mortal goods thou art bereft
And from thy slender store two loaves alone to thee are left
Sell one, and with the dole
Buy hyacinths to feed thy soul.

--Moslih Saadi

This is such a lovely thought and image - I've always wondered how beautiful it must be in its original language, with all the carefully chosen sounds and nuances of a great poet and a language famous for the loveliness of its poetry.

14. Poetry is powerful language - when it is applied to issues of social
injustice and oppression, it can have a stronger effect than many more words in an essay or newspaper article.

Kick for our LaLa

17. LOL!!! And yet it's true - that's what makes it so funny. Brilliant!
THanks for the laugh.

This Robert Frost quote isn't so funny, but it's true too:
"Poetry is what gets lost in translation." -Robert Frost, poet (1874-1963)

Communication in words is a strong filter for emotions and reality. Poetry at its best briefly yet timelessly bypasses that filter.
