Bulldog Meets the Reverend Moon: The Birth of an ERW Media Empire
Edited on Sat Feb-18-06 02:58 PM by leveymg
There's an interesting string here about a GOP Swiftboating campaign against Russell Tice, a source for the New York Times expose of the NSA domestic wiretapping scandal. http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=364&topic_id=459856&mesg_id=459856

When I looked at the author of that smear piece against Tice, I found that it was written by Jim Kouri, whose bio lists him as the Fifth Head of the National Association of Chiefs of Police. Okay. But, lurking behind him I discovered a fascinating network of Far Right pundits, and a financial snake oil salesman from Reno, Nevada who's reinvented himself into a Conservative New-Media Baron using ad revenues from major corporations that have a history as heavy GOP contributors.

The ERW Internet attack on Tice is part of what appears to be a big corporate sponsored Right-Wing media operation that spans three countries, more than 90 websites, an on-campus organizing operation, a financial services company, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, a PR group, and one very busy financial huckster in Reno, Nevada touting a new-media business model dot-com that shares out advertising revenues from corporate giants Ameritrade, SBC Corp, and Circuit City with conservative pundits and website operators -- which he calls "beta testers" -- across the United States and Canada.

This is Reverend Moon meets the Bulldog, only there's no "church" or naked Marine that's been spotted, yet.

***

The author of the Tice attack piece is Jim Kouri, and his by-line appears in an on-line site called AXcess News.com. Here's the piece:

NY Times Used Psychotic Paranoid as NSA Spy Story Source?
By Jim Kouri
http://www.axcessnews.com/modules/wfsection/article.php?articleid=8212

<snip>
Tice was testifying because he was a National Security Agency intelligence officer who was stripped of his security clearance after he reported his suspicions that a former colleague at the Defense Intelligence Agency was a spy. The matter was dismissed by the DIA, but Tice obsessively kept pushing and was subsequently ordered to take a psychological examination during which he was diagnosed as paranoid. Of course, the leftists and the news media are either saying or insinuating that his dismissal is related to the NSA surveillance program in order to bolster the image of a "brave whistleblower."

Here's another "news" article by Kouri from the same site that carries content from Axcess News.

Activist Judge Turning Over Top Secret NSA Files to Leftists

By Jim Kouri

(AXcess News) New York - On Thursday, a federal judge decided that Americans' safety and security takes a back-seat to a left-wing groups' right to view and promulgate top secret National Security Agency documents relating to the terrorism surveillance program. In this case, one of the left-wing groups has direct ties to Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT), who was forced to step down from his perch on the Senate Intelligence Committee in 1987 over allegations he leaked classified information to news reporters.

Take a look at the advertisers at the site: Corporate GOP Campaign Biggies - Ameritrade, SBC, Circuit City. The site also gives you a TribalFuision Cookie, so run your Spyware washer afterwards if you must go there yourself.

Kouri's also at: http://www.mensnewsdaily.com /

and has his own site: Website (if any): http://jimkouri.us /

There we find his Biography: Jim Kouri, CPP is currently fifth vice-president of the National Association of Chiefs of Police. He's former chief at a New York City housing project in Washington Heights nicknamed "Crack City" by reporters covering the drug war in the 1980s. In addition, he served as director of public safety at a New Jersey university. He's also served on the National Drug Task Force and trained police and security officers throughout the country. He writes for many police and crime magazines including Chief of Police, Police Times, The Narc Officer, Campus Law Enforcement Journal, and others. He's appeared as on-air commentator for over 100 TV and radio news and talk shows including Oprah, McLaughlin Report, CNN Headline News, MTV, Fox News, etc. His book Assume The Position is available at Amazon.Com, Booksamillion.com, and can be ordered at local bookstores. Kouri holds a bachelor of science in criminal justice and master of arts in public administration and he's a board certified protection professional. He is a Staff writer for the New Media Alliance, Inc.

So, what is the New Media Alliance?

AXcess News, Inc.: e-octopus money center

I think we've found ourselves another Bulldog, backed by and another set of Roveans.

New Media Alliance content is carried by AXcess News, which appears to be the operation's e-octopus and money center for a large right-wing propaganda operation that poses as a hip Next-Gen news site and financial news network. It's a web-based Fox News.

Online News Publisher to Join The Open Content Alliance
AXcess News to become first online news publisher to open its vast archive of news articles to the public through the Open Content Alliance. Other news org.'s balk at free online access.
Distribution Source : ArriveNet

Date : Sunday, November 06, 2005

Reno, Nevada -- (ArriveNet - Nov 06, 2005) -- Sunday, AXcess News petitioned the Open Content Alliance to join the nonprofit organization and offer its vast archive of news articles to help build a permanent archive of multilingual digitized text and multimedia content from around the world.

The Open Content Alliance (OCA) represents the collaborative efforts of a group of cultural, technology, nonprofit, and governmental organizations from around the world that will help build a permanent archive of multilingual digitized text and multimedia content. The OCA was conceived by the Internet Archive and Yahoo! in early 2005 as a way to offer broad, public access to a rich panorama of world culture.

AXcess News is the largest closely held electronic publisher of broad news online in the nation with 92 cities in its network.

"We believe the Open Content Alliance is one of the best cooperative efforts to truly adhere to what the World Wide Web is all about - free access to information globally," said Eric Stevenson, AXcess News editor.

Stevenson noted that many news organizations use their archives as a profit center, charging users access to that information, which he believes is to "old school".

"If you are going to put your news online then you shouldn't be forcing readers to sign up for unwanted email just to read that content and worse, charge them to access your archives," said Stevenson. "The Open Content Alliance is the future of the web at its purest and AXcess News in its offer to join and contribute is trying to do its part to expand information and knowledge to everyone. We challenge old-school print news organizations to do the same and support the development of the OCA."

WIKEPEDIA describes the history of Axcees News: AXcess News started out as an online newsletter for a financial service and slowly evolved its publishing format but retained its financial market content.

By 2002 it had evolved into a news web publisher though still covering financial markets. During 2003 it expanded its news coverage to include the broad news topics it publishes today. In late 2003 it began developing its network approach to online news, adding the first 25 city news sites.

In 2004 the network of city news sites had expanded to 92 and AXcess News started syndicating online news for a Canadian online news network. A second online news network was also in development in the UK, and AXcess News then entered into reciprocating agreements to syndicate online news between both organizations.

As of 2005, AXcess News is preparing to join both the Canadian and United Kingdom based online publishing organizations in forming one global network, each publisher maintaining its own identity, yet all three cooperating to provide readers everywhere with high quality news as it breaks from across the 230 cities they serve.

So, Who is Eric Stevenson, anyway?

Here a puff bio about Eric Stevenson for PRweb, which seems to focus almost exclusively on Stevenson and his various media and financial exertions: http://www.prweb.com/releases/2002/5/prweb39497.htm

Eric Stevenson Becomes Featured Columnist for BizWiz.com

Financial pundit, Eric Stevenson, becomes featured columnist for BizWiz.com

Phoenix, AZ (PRWeb.Com) - May 2002. Eric Stevenson, long recognized by the financial news media as one of America's leading financial guru's, began writing a regular column for bizwiz.com, one of America's leading on-line business portals.

Eric agreed to become a featured columnist for BizWiz.com in late April, sighting the need to offer the business community access to financial news without spin.

Considered a pundit by the financial news media, Stevenson has given interviews to the Wall Street Journal, Dow Jones and others on his views towards some of the more controversal merger and acquisitions that took place on Wall Street, such as the Compaq/HP merger.

More recently he has begun to speak out against some of the major Telco's, such as Qwest and Worldcom, sighting their huge debt loads and risks associated with owning those companies shares.

"Its my view that the financial community needs to be more responsible on its reporting to the media. Especially in the wake of the witch hunt Wall Street analysts have been facing lately from the SEC." Said Stevenson.

"I am going to write what I believe the business community and investors need to read, not what sells ad copy. BizWiz is well respected and I think they offer real information people need and want. That's why I agreed to become a featured columnist." Stevenson said.

About Eric Stevenson
Eric is one the leading management analysts in the United States and a recognized economist with the American Economic Association. He is editor of theaxcess.net, a pioneer in on-line financial newsletters and founding President of Axiom Capital Corporation. (www.axiomcapital.net )

Strangley, despite his claimed outspoken candor about telcos, SBC is one of his three biggest advertisers.

The Swiftboaters Go New-Media: Sharing the Spoils

Stevenson has developed his financial info wire reporting service into an ERW web-based news network which he rents to swiftboaters, like Kouri. Here's his call for content providers ("beta testers"), who are paid a portion of the revenues gained from his big corporate advertisers at his news site: http://www.prweb.com/releases/2005/8/prweb277822.htm

Call For Writers - News Org Beta Tests New Network

AXcess News is opening its network to writers in a beta test of its new system. The top writers will get a chance to join a news co-op and share in its royalties.

Reno, NV (PRWEB) August 29, 2005 -- Few writers get the chance to make it in the news trade, that's why AXcess News has opened its network to writers across all topics. In testing its new system, AXcess News has decided to accept stories for display across one of the largest online news networks in the USA."We decided to give writers a chance while we beta test our new web platform," said Eric Stevenson, Editor-in-chief AXcess News.

AXcess News is accepting stories in technology, business, environmental, health, world, national, entertainment and sports topics. Those writers whose stories show the most reader interest will be invited to join a pure web news co-op being launched later this year. The co-op was formed through a partnership of three online news networks in the USA, CA and UK that displays stories instantly in 230 major metro markets. Co-op members will receive a 20% royalty on all stories they submit.

Stevenson went on to say, "Web publishers are given the 'cold shoulder' by news organizations that refuse to accept them. Even smaller newspapers are fed up with them and the ever-increasing costs of that news. "They'll 'sell you news', but you're not good enough to submit your stories - unless your a newspaper and even then the larger syndicates dominate it. "That's why three online publishers got together and agreed to form a news cooperative for small newspapers and web publishers where they share their content - and its revenue.

Here's your chance to become part of the first web-based global news organization that's opening its membership ranks to columnists and journalists worldwide who believe news should not be controlled by a handful of newspaper syndicates. To submit your stories for the beta test, go to http://www.axcessnews.com / and use the Contact Us form. Stories should be written in English. No foreign language submissions will be accepted. Columnists and newsletter publishers are encouraged to participate. Articles should be limited to no more than 500 words.

THE MONEY CENTER

Meanwhile, Stevenson still operates his financial services company, Axiom Capital. This from a site in China, WunZhang, which is associated with Axiom Capital Corporation. This site hosts a vanity puff piece that describes itself as part of "PRWeb": http://www.wunzhang.com/firm/prf868.htm

The PR Outfit behind the "Voice of the Common Man"

In addition to the Axcess News and its partners, there's a PR outfit that's promoting Stevenson's financial services company and his role as a "voice of the common man." PR WEB lauds AXcess for its "unbiased news reports." Here's one of its press releases, "Wall Street Columnist . . ." http://www.prweb.com/releases/2002/11/prweb50708.htm

AXcess News Controversial Editorial Column Syndicated Worldwide – dubbed a “voice for the common man”

AXcess News, an online business and financial news portal has added a new editorial column, dubbed the "voice of the common man". The controversial column provides interviews with grass roots organizations, third parties and related subject matter links for viewers. The column is being syndicated through the Independent Media Organization for worldwide use free of charge!

CARSON CITY NEV - Nov 18, 2002 (Prweb.com) - AXcess News, an online financial news web site that offers viewers unbiased reporting on current business and stock market issues, has been adding columnists to its score of staff journalists who write exclusively for this news organization.Today, AXcess News has added a new editorial column whose focus is aimed towards controversial subjects.

Inside Commentary can be found at http://www.theaxcess.net /. Its first article is an interview with Ian Park, founder of a grass roots organization to reform penny stock rules dubbed “Project Penny”. The article quotes a congressman, the chairman of the Pink Sheets and an attorney who served as senior member of the Securities and Exchange Commission’s enforcement division.“Inside Commentary is a voice for the common man,” said Eric Stevenson, Editor, AXcess News. While not touted as a political platform for reformists, many grass roots organizations have newsworthy stories that need to be told. Inside Commentary does just that.

AXcess News is including interviews in each of its editorial columns with newsworthy grass roots organizers. Third parties are sought for their perspective and views on these controversial subjects. The editorial staff supports those articles by including interesting links to related websites based on unbiased keyword searches on the Internet. Viewers are provided access to websites and email addresses in order to directly reach out to those organizations being interviewed. AXcess News encourages its readers to communicate with those organizations and offer their own experiences or interests in their cause.

About AXcess News
AXcess News was formed to provide investors in particular, access to unbiased news reports on current business issues of interest. The news portal boasts its own staff of journalists and carries unique financial columns offering exclusive interviews with public company executives affected by current stock market issues. Its own version of stock picks comes from the independent thinking of its staff reporters who spot current trends in the market and go after companies often too small for Wall Street to notice. That trend has produced success for AXcess News in that none of these stock picks or interviews was paid advertisements. The editorial staff believes that unbiased reporting produces subscriber loyalty and is offering its on-line memberships free of charge. ABN provides its members weekly news alerts, outlining the latest stories being posted to the website and covers those stocks it follows as well.

1. And who said investigative reporting was dead...
...just the MSM.

But it's alive and well among studious and determined individuals in America.

Bravo.

I think I'll be re-reading and gathering threads from this great "sourdough starter" you've uncovered for a little while...fascinating.

3. Yeah, they sound as if they and...
... somebody's money have an agenda (why is it that these people write so badly?).

Kouri is probably a poseur, since his official titles seem to change from time to time and place to place. He, also, doesn't write very well. From what I can find, he's probably a security guard with a grudge, not a police chief. While I accept that more people these days are having to resort to on-demand publishing, his book, self-published, doesn't exactly sound like a winner overlooked by the traditional houses.

I got a kick out of their "score of staff journalists." Last time I checked, a score was twenty. Hell, there are many profitable monthly magazines, with far more in ad revenues than these guys, that don't have twenty journalists on staff.

This doesn't sound so much like they are experienced PR people, but someone doing some hustling. Worth a look into, though.

BTW, I've yet to hear of a whistleblower since 9-11 who hasn't had retribution taken. Rowley, Edmonds, et al.
