Whittington Apologizes TO Cheney for Being Shot in the Face-Un**believable
Cheney shooting victim says sorry - to Cheney

Julian Borger in Washington
Saturday February 18, 2006
The Guardian

Harry Whittington, the Republican lawyer shot by Dick Cheney in a hunting accident in Texas last weekend, emerged from hospital yesterday and apologised to the vice-president for all the trouble the shooting had caused. Mr Whittington, who suffered a minor heart attack when a shotgun pellet lodged near his heart, absolved Mr Cheney of any responsibility.

As he was discharged from hospital in Corpus Christi, he said: "We all assume certain risks in whatever we do, whatever activities we pursue. And regardless of how experienced, careful and dedicated we are, accidents do and will happen."

Mr Whittington, whose face was still bruised but who otherwise appeared healthy, said: "My family and I are deeply sorry for all that Vice-President Cheney and his family have had to go through this past week.

"We send our love and respect to them, as they deal with situations that are much more serious than what we've had to deal with this week."

He added: "We hope that he will continue to come to Texas and seek the relaxation that he deserves."

"Thankfully Harry Whittington is on the mend and doing well," Mr Cheney told the Wyoming state legislature yesterday at the start of a holiday trip to his home state.

23. Don't you think it's a bit much--
That Whittington apologized to Cheney. I mean, it's not like he should have said something like, "That's it, Buster, you're off my Christmas list now!" ('Tho that would have been funny to hear!;-) Aplogizing for getting shot is a bit ass-kissy. A simple, "That's all in the past now. I'm sure we'll be more careful in the future." or something along those lines would sound a bit less wierd.

28. I'm not looking at the transcript
but I thought it read that he was sorry FOR the VP, sorry that it had been such a difficult week.

To me, that's a big difference from apologizing TO him because it happened, like if he said "sorry I got in the way of your danged gun, there Dick."

31. EXACTLY!
You're absolutely right (I didn't want to make an issue of the quote from the original poster--I haven't been here long). However, that's exactly what was done. Besides, the guy is 78? years old; he was raised with those 'old school' values that tell us to make everyone around us feel comfortable--that's all the guy was doing...

33. Nah it's pretty straightforward theatre of the absurd
with the desired effect to mute responses of criticism against the war mongering murderous and sot VP.

Deflection-Propaganda 101.

Okay the issue is a wrap the victim is over it why should the rest of us care?
Oh wait it was a criminal act. But of course small beans in Cheney's criminal career.

18. I find it amazing
how much of the sub-text is WHIZZING over DUers' heads.

"Aristocratic" Texans have their own codespeak. Harry is no small potatoes, HE covered *dauphin's butt during Funeralgate and growed the Repuke party in Texas. You think *Poppy don't owe him? Never mind he be married to a Baker. Remember the *janitor? *Poppy and Cheney get along jes' SOOOO well, doncha know. :sarcasm:

Harry was NOT AT ALL "CONFUSED" when he read from a PREPARED STATEMENT and said for the whole world to hear, "...last FRIDAY."
He's a TEXAS LAWYER who has so far refused to sign off on an affadavit. Didn't ANYONE notice how fast that little piece of paper got ripped away? (Hmmm... wonder what other little Freudian slips may have been contained therein).

C'MON KIDS, if ya gonna watch the soap opera, read your Cliff Notes, or AT THE VERY LEAST go back and watch ALL the episodes of "Dallas." :silly:

20. Please elaborate
but don't make me watch Dallas.

As a sidenote the King-Armstrong family IS Texas royalty.

Edna Ferber's novel "Giant" and the subsequent movie was modeled after the King ranch and its aristocratic groupings.

Why would we want to have to watch it too? Of course, from what I remember about Dallas the head honcho got shot. His sidekick didn't shoot a friend. Hmm...

26. There be Trouble. Trouble in River City...
The King-Armstrong family IS Texas royalty. Indeed. Remember how the *dauphin on his trip to the U.K. destroyed the Queen's garden with his helicopter, and traumatized her flamingos?

Oh, dearest ClaraT, I know I'm being obtuse.

Read the entire transcript of Whittington's statements and imagine your toungue pressing against your cheek so hard that it threatens to break the skin.

Methinks Cheney is in DEEP shit with the Übermenschen.

thought better of it. Those people make me sick. They will never get those brown stains off their noses. Even if they ever develop a brain and decide they want to, I won't let them forget how stupid they are. Damn bunch of dumbasses. Damned if I'd apologize to the s.o.b. repuke who shot me. Eh, what else can the guy do though? If he decided to flip Cheney the bird, he'd just get shot again. Too bad it's not open season on right wing ass kissers for the rest of us. Phfft!

This does make me wonder though. What if the whole thing was a repuke ass kissing loyalty test? You KNOW how weird that bunch is. I mean they literally turn their pledges into grave robbers (Re: Geronimo's skull and the Skull and Bones Society.) Okay, it's too much. I know. I'm not Letterman. He's still firing off some good Cheney jokes, isn't he?

24. Doesn't surprise me
It doesn't make much sense after Cheney took full responsibility for the incident on Faux, but the shooting has become so embarrassing for the VP that I knew they would prop Whittington before a microphone and hand him a statement to read.

politics as usual.

If they handed him a statement to *read*, why did FRIDAY come out of his mouth? He's a LAWYER. Unlike the *ward whose ass he covered, Harry CAN READ.

30. So are you suggesting
That Whit may have been using PrIvate coded messages that are somewhat IndePendent of the situation as we innocents may be led to believe/ Is that PlausIble?

Yes, one could very well imagine a dry sardonic Texas drawl sending a message other than the obvious. That is the way with the Rattlesnake Royalty.

Love Ya' Karenina

Apart from the shooting incident there is much beneath the surface. Noww another thing that I have long thought about is that Cheney is not the all-powerful that folks believe him to be but rather a man who the Big Players can count on to rubber stamp their greedy schemes and be a good Sunday morning Rep for the Meet the Presstitues lovefests.

34. Why wouldn't he sign an affidavit?
Thanks for your post - you've inspired me to actually read the transcript. This sentence really jumped out at me: "And we hope that (Cheney) will continue to come to Texas and seek the relaxation that he deserves." That's an odd choice of words - he hope Cheney gets what he deserves? He mentions the incident that occured "Friday" and also makes sure to state how medical attention was very important to someone his age. Maybe he's hinting about something.

It's also interesting that Whittington refused to sign an affidavit about what happened. If he's really so gung-ho to protect Cheney, why wouldn't he sign to officially confirm Cheney's story? As a lawyer, he knows that a false affidavit is considered perjury under the law. Is that why he was reluctant? Or was he sending a signal to Cheney, w/the aff. and the speech, that he may not be willing to go along with the established story? Based on the hints given in his speech, maybe the incident really went down on Friday, with Cheney using his own ambulance & paramedics instead of sending Whittington to the hospital to receive proper medical attention. On Saturday, they realize he isn't getting better, and send him to the hospital. By that time, they realize the delay looks bad, so concoct a story that it happened that same day. That could also explain the confused timeline we're getting from Cheney. Is this what you're implying? I'm basically making this up, but you never know w/this crowd; maybe there is something more to this.
