Is there any chance that Cheney will be gone before 2008?
I've heard several people suggest that it would be a brilliant political move to replace Cheney before 2008 because then the Bush administration would be able to appoint whomever they like as VP and the new VP would be an incumbent for the 2008 race.

However, on Sunday morning talk, both George Stephanapolous and Chris Matthews brought this topic up and got a "hell no" from every single guest. Howard Fineman suggested that the legacy of the Bush administration is the future of Iraq and therefore the administration would never replace Cheney, who has played such an important role in Iraq.

Reasons Cheney could go? Health and Plame-gate come to mind right away . . . .

2. If there's anything left of our judicial system, he will be indicted
in the Plame matter.

And if there's anything left of our political system, that will force him to step down.

I mean obviously there are much better republicans who could be VP and part of me would love to see Cheney go. But then haven't we lost the issue for 2008?

I suppose it depends how he goes and what happens with the other republican scandals. If he's ousted for a serious enough reason or if another republican scandal materializes, there could be a backlash against all republicans.

6. Cheney won't be running for 2008, so it won't matter. Once he's done
with his 8 years in office - he can then kick back and enjoy his profits from Halliburton - not to mention his "consulting" fees he'll get from various corps and speaking events.

His replacement would not be the next runner up either, more likely just a figure head.

11. Well you DO remember the bunker construction days, don't you?

Many speculated that Cheney was building a private
hidey hole under the naval observatory to keep
himself safe in the event of a nuklar attack.
WE at DU know bettter:
He was simply upgrading and improving his tunnel to home

9. Bush would not want to appoint a VP
First, it would be a bruising confirmation battle. Remember, the Constitution says a VP must be confirmed by both houses.

Second, Bush would have to pick sides in the Republican primary for 2008. There is no obvious heir apparent to the Republican nomination, as was the case in 1988. I'm sure Bush has his favorite candidate, but other Republicans will want an equal chance at the nomination too. If Bush picks sides by elevating one candidate to the VP slot, he will damage relations with his own party, and further damage his already weakening political capital.

12. Good point
Although the republicans still have both houses of Congress (at least until October)the republicans don't seem to be falling in line like they were before. I think many republcans are realizing that following the President's agenda could mean a big upset at home in the fall. So, in turn, it makes sense they wouldn't necessarily follow the President in the appointment of a VP too. I wonder how oblivious Bush and Cheney are to this issue though???

13. nope . . . not BEFORE 2008 . . . not DURING 2008 . . . not AFTER 2008 . .
the only way they can stay out of prison is to stay in power . . . and since they control EVERYTHING (executive, legislature, judiciary, media, military, corporations), they certainly have the means to do it . . .

17. Uncle Dick is probably way too stubborn to leave voluntarily but
Edited on Mon Feb-20-06 09:25 AM by Old Crusoe
if you were a Republican political strategist -- god forbid -- you would already be meeting secretly with power brokers to find a way to dump the veep.

A 29% approval rating going into the critical fund-raising months of a mid-term election is not a plus for the GOP.

Cheney's a big lizard slithering through Washington and sooner or later, someone's going to drain the pond.

Patrick Fitzgerald comes to mind.

Heavy-hitting Rethugs from public & private sectors conspire to unhinge Dick's grip on power. A physician emerges to announce his "grave concern" for the stress Cheney carries and fears for his health.

Dick resigns. Dubya, having fulfilled his dark debt to the fundies with Roberts and Alito, is free to name a black woman to the VP post. Kindasleazy buys a new pair of shoes and moves her office across town.

Dick Lugar is jabbed awake by an aide and told he's been nominated for Condi's job.

Cheney will be out of there by Labor Day at the latest.

18. Bush could replace him
not to give someone an incumbancy to run with, but rather to make history.

What if Bush appointed the first woman vice-president to serve out the last year of Cheney's term?

She wouldn't run in the next race so that wouldn't be an issue. It would just be to get rid of Cheney as an issue in the next campaign and make some nice cheap positive news and make the history books.

I think the confirmation would go pretty smoothly as the Democratic leaders wouldn't want to have a distraction of trying to keep out the first woman VP while the presidential election campaign is going on.

Who would be a good candidate?

Maybe be Kay Bailey Hutchison?

is the name I've heard suggested. Actually it's probably the only way a black republican woman could become VP . . . Come to think of it, if she was VP, would that be enough for the republicans?
