"Girl's prosthetic legs stolen for second time"
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - For the second time in three months, a 16-year-old California girl who lost a leg in an accident has had her artificial limbs stolen.

Melissa Huff, an Arcadia High School student who uses a $16,000 prosthetic limb to play softball for the school team and another one, valued at $12,000, for everyday use, said both were taken from her bedroom Tuesday.

"I was picking up my little brother from school when my mom called me and asked where I left the two prosthetic legs," Huff, who lives in the Los Angeles suburb of Temple City, told Reuters in an interview.

"I knew right then that it had happened again."

1. Why?
There are some twisted freaks out there, stealing that poor girl's prosthetics.

5. I don't know. :^( Either someone is making money selling them on the
sly or this is a personal vendetta against this poor kid.

6. I really doubt that you can make money on these prosthetics
Being as that each and every one is individually fitted to the user. Even if you found one that was the right length, you would still have to deal with how the cup of the prosthetic fits to a person's stump. If it doesn't fit right it could lead to soreness, open wounds, infections and even further amputation. Yes, if you were really, really desperate, you would steal a prosthetic, but highly unlikely otherwise.

4. How good is she at softball?
The only reason I can think of to steal these
is to keep her from playing; especially when
the article mentions that her leg was returned
a month after the first theft.

Do other teams regard her as a serious threat?
Does some jealous second-stringer on HER team want to replace her?

Crimes involve motives;
the pool of people with a MOTIVE to do this
must be fairly small.

8. Since first one was stolen in Nov., I wonder if she plays basketball, too
It was returned a month ago, the article said. Maybe the season ended?

I'm with you, there's a specific motive at work here.

7. They aren't just expensive- they are the product of quite a lot of fitting

it's not like she can just go and pick up another one "off the shelf".

It's hard to imagine someone didn't see whoever broke into her home TWICE and/or that whoever didn't isn't going to tell someone else who will tell someone else who will hopefully spill the beans.
