Catholic Millionaire's Dream Town
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11434439/site/newsweek/ The Freepers were applauding this. Surprised?

Since my husband is living about 30 miles from this, does it make me what to move there? ABSOLUTELY NOT.

All this makes me think of is Jim Jones. Please don't accuse me of Catholic bashing. I was raised one, but this sounds absolutely LOONY to me.

Pharmacists will not be allowed to sell contraceptives? ANY? Well, they better build VERY BIG Condos. I guess it's a given that no gays will be able to buy there, nor any "living in sin" unmarried couples. I wonder if they will require a medical examination before a deed is signed to see that any married couples have not been sterilized? Well, I guess that would let us out.

Tell me, is it something in the water down there?

2. Why is this weirder than...
...Amish communities?

No one's forcing anyone to move there. Might be a bit hard on the kids having to grow up there, but strict Mennonite and Brotherhood communities lose some of their kids to the "outside," too.

I'm not getting why this is so awful, though I would certainly not choose to live there, as I share almost none of the social values of the group.

curiously,
Bright

3. personally
i think all republicans should move to the same area of the country, govern their own lives by their own laws - since they all think alike anyway it would be easier for them to start their own small community than it would be for liberals to do the same - and just leave the rest of us the hell alone. Let us bicker and argue and do all the 'democracy' stuff and leave them to the military dicatorship they crave so badly.

4. Amish don't play to the newspapers
I have no desire to live in an Amish community either, and I am also sure they don't particularly want me there. You're right-it is mostly the same, but he's got an article in Newsweek, and I'm sure he's looking to get more.

8. My son's Dad grew up in a Mennonite town
just up the street from a Mennonite college, surrounded by Mennonite farms, but his family's Presbyterian. The Mennonite families there don't expect others to conform to thier belief system. You can buy beer or a flashy car in town if you want, the Mennonites just don't and leave thier neighbors be. They're pretty cool people.

It's the externally imposed morality in Monaghan's community that's so concerning. A planned community marketed toward conservative Catholics is fine, but should kids growing up in those families be forced to follow the dictates of the community's beliefs even if they diverge from thier own concience? Should a young woman with irregular periods or endometriosis be deprived of the pill that could reduce her suffering because her parents chose to live in PapalBullshitville? Will she be ostracized if her parents get divorced or her mother's illness is treated with stem cells?

It's not illegal but it sets a nasty precedent. Company towns, gated communites and that wierd-ass fake community Disney built creep me out just as much.

9. The big difference is that the Amish aren't trying to force their
lifestyle on anyone else. They want to do their thing and be left alone.

This idiot's making his dream community. If he could, he'd force all his personal beliefs down your throat and mine with no hesitation. And if this community is a success, he's takin' the show on the road.

10. Amish don't have Millionaires putting up
HALF A MILLION homes for them. I have been to Lancaster County, Pa., many tmes. They have FARMS. Grow their own food, make their own clothes, etc., etc. Basically, all they want is to be self sufficient and left alone, according to their religion.

Put aside the religion issue for one minute. WHO is going to BUY these HALF A MILLION dollar homes? Are they truly middle class, never mind POOR people? Don't you think some millionaire Catholic/Christian wold be following his religion or the teachings of Jesus more by building AFFORDABLE housing that the middle class/poor COULD AFFORD instead of some grand Utopia of Religion for the RICH?

As I said, my husband lives in this area. They are having problems hiring teachers, firefighters, police, because these people CANNOT AFFORD the cost of housing there. Don't you think if this millionaire was a TRUE Christian he would be wanting to follow his religion better by doing something to solve THIS problem?

Sorry, but I think, once again, they are hijacking religion in the name of PRIDE, GREED, and PROFITS.

5. Oh, Gawd. It's Domino Monaghan.
'Nuff said.

Well, one question, though: Would this 'town' survive a lawsuit challenging it by....well, anybody it didn't deem worthy? Can there be private towns?
