What I am asking that thoughtful folks consider is the broader picture of what is occuring. The *corp media over the last few months has 'Muricans all whipped up into a frenzy about dem crazy Ay-rabs going bats over a cartoon, Iran's non-existent nuclear capability, highlighting any and every atrocity committed in any backward village they can find und so weiter und sofort.

NOW T*PTB announce selling off the administrative functions of major (mostly east coast) ports to UAE, with the Carlyle Group FIRST in line to reap more HUMUNGOUS profits. They are NOT unaware that the anti-Arab conditioning of the American populace will create a bi-partisan backlash. Could the question being posed be, "WHO CARES WHAT YOU THINK?"

Subtext: "And just what are YOU gonna do about it?"
THEN peruse the first 3 pages of DU for links to Halliburton's new(?) contracts for detention facilities...

That I get. What I'm not sure I understand is exactly the significance of the STAFF cap. Was he trying to evoke a Nazi Guard? Even if he had such contempt, why show it, you know? To sort of needle people with his power, & say that he doesn't have to follow the rules of society, & can even quietly show his contempt for this event? Is it a sort of silent power trip for him? I DO NOT understand the neocon mindset, and it's a definite weakness. My default is to always assume people have good motives, and so I have to keep periodically remembering exactly how evil these guys are. Luckily there are so many people here who have much more information about this regime to learn from.

29. I have my own ideas, but

I was curious to see if it's the same thing you are thinking. Sometimes I veer between "tin-foil" and non-tin foil mindsets. The non-tin foil part of me says that it's an overreaction, just typical corruption & cronyism, etc. etc. But the tin-foil part of me sees a pattern developing, and I've seen it developing for awhile. But even so, it's difficult for me to explain; I can't quite grasp it. It seems like you've got a lot better handle on it.

As I see it, it goes something like this. Corporate media dutifully beating the fear drumbeats Bin Laden tapes, false terror alerts, cartoon propaganda, Iran's "defiance" on nukes, ports sold to Arabs. The overall message is "fear the Muslims" and that's gotten much louder in the past couple months. They are trying to prepare people, create the images, so that these images are instilled in us and we will instantly react in a certain way.

At the same time, these ports are sold to the UAE, an act that seemingly contradicts the Administration's anti-terror mantra and alienates Republicans. But it doesn't matter to Bush how much public support they lose over this, because they've gained something much more valuable to them. UAE has given them something very valuable in return. Maybe that "deal" involves using UAE to ship oil from Iraq. Iraq is landlocked, but if UAE allows us to use their ports, Halliburton & Co. can start pumping out the oil & start making money from Iraq. Or maybe it involved using UAE airspace, land & water to launch an attack at Iran - UAE is practically touching the Iranian coast. This is what I'm leaning toward. Maybe both. (The Cheney gathering of Halliburton & aerospace lobbyists seems related to implemention/discussion of this step as well.)

The PNAC plan for empire is incredibly ambitious & practically impossible to implement as our society exists now. They're going to have to be more dramatic. I think we are racheting up to go to war with Iran next, but the old propaganda isn't working like Iraq. In order to get Americans to accept the next war, they need something big. Something that scares Americans enough that we accept it w/o question. "Fear the Muslims" is drilled into us; "fear Iran" is drilled into us - if something big happens, we've already been told who to blame. All they need is that event. And maybe that event is what this sale allows.

I have read all your links, and you are outlining a pattern, but IMO, a couple dots don't seem to fit. Even in my tin-foil mindset, the detention camps don't fit the pattern; first, because there's no media coverage - it's not part of the propaganda package; second, because the Admin. doesn't seem to be giving the message to fear them; it wants us to fear the Middle East. I don't see that "What are you going to do about it" subtext. Instead, they seem to be basically ignoring public opinion as they do the machinations. Am I connecting the dots somewhat? I don't get it all, really, but I'm trying to learn. And I feel this odd pressure to do so that keeps me coming back to DU. Thanks for collecting & posting those links!

need to be read. A young man called Randi this afternoon. I was driving around doing my errands, but he said that he hadn't heard anyone else talk about the ports except her. He decided to do his own research and crazily enough picked a source from the Fox Network website about this. He figured out that their story was BS. Randi for once listened.

I got the impression that he was just getting his eyes opened and didn't know about places like DU or the other ones. She asked him how old he was and he said he was twenty six.
