4. It's still surprisingly evocative of Gauguin's paintings.
When I first went, I was prepared to be disappointed - prepared to see the paved 'paradise' like Waikiki. I wasn't. I was thrilled that it was kept as under'developed' as it is.

3. (Be still, my heart!) We'd ruin it. We'd pave it over and ...

... put fast food franchises all over - like (cough) Hawaii. I've actually heard Americans speak in awe of an Hawaii-themed MacDonalds (and the teriyaki burger). (Gag me with a spoon.) There's a lot to criticize the French about in how they've exerted colonial rule over French Polynesia, but plastique modernization isn't one of them. French Polynesia, I'm told, was the first place on the planet to require all cable and wire (e.g. telephone, power, cable TV) to be installed underground - no telephone poles and wires to ruin the view. Despite the astronomic commercial value of oceanfront property, vast amounts of public frontage and access is diligently protected. Americans? We go nuts over the "unspoiled beauty" and immediately erect a billboard to announce it and a fast food joint to pander to the polyester pilgrims.
