Wow! I just found a REALLY weird bug in the DU spell checker!

I was checking my last post before replying, and the spell check stopped on the mis-spelled name Earnhart (I think I had spelled it Ernhart), and the spell Checker offered "Erhart."

But what happened is, I hit the "Backspace" key by mistake. Then the Spellchecker screen went blank for a second, the this popped up in the spell checker window:

36. It sort of looks like an old Data Processing Punch card...

...I don't know if you're old enough to remember those, so for those who don't, it's what computer programmers used to use to input data into those big old Unix computers (back in the 1970's and early 80's) before Floppies made them obsolete.

But I do like the idea, I think using different mis-spelled english words give you different chinese characters, have you tried any other words?

48. Yes, I do remember punch cards -- used them to register for college

courses when I started at the University of Miami, Coral Gables, Florida, in September, 1956. I'm married to a former electrical engineer (Northeastern University EE graduated in 1957) who retrained himself as a software engineer. He put together a Heath/Zenith kit with dual floppies in the early '80s. At the time, he thought it was "blazing fast"! He's now age 71 and still messing around with the newest computers. His latest skill is with a new Sony digital camera. What do they say about men? The only thing that changes through the years is the price (and complexity) of their toys!

I didn't install Korean, Chinese, or Japanese character sets when prompted to do it. Sometimes I accidentally go to an Asian web site and see many of the "doodles" posted last night. I think they're kind of neat from a graphics point of view.

...but this one was a "take it out of the box and connect the wires" sort of assembly, but it didn't have a Hard Drive, and had 2, 5-1/4" Floppies. DOS 2.x, I think it was 6 Mhz, 512K ram, oh and that Amber and black CGA monitor.:D

I've built all my computers since my 3rd one in 1997 though. I love that my current Palm Zire 72 has more Ram and storage space than my first Laptop in 1992.

I moved from the unit directly below us in October. We bought both when the building went condo. I remodeled that unit from the studs out.

Well, I just rented it to a great guy. And he put in an order for a phone line.

When we left, everything was working fine.

The phone company told him there was an interior wiring problem. And, they sent someone out to fix it at my expense.

Well, the techie said the wires were crossed up or somehow wrong.

Tell me. How did that happen between October and now, when no one had access to those wires?

And, were they that way while I was living there and using the phone line for my phone and net connection?

Mine are like that, they were like that when I moved in.

When I used a Phone-line tester to check the phone lines in my house, it said the wires were switched, but the phone still works like that.

But when I went to add a few outlets in my house, they never worked the first time, until I went back out and wired the new lines backward.

What I ended up doing is re-marking the wires with red and green electrical tape, I don't have the tool to fix it inside the Telco box, and who knows, maybe the whole neighborhood is like that?

Moved from a rental to a house we bought. About 2 months later I pick up the phone one day to call someone and there is already someone on the line. Turns out the phone company "forgot" to disconnect my rental line. My phone was active in both places, waiting for someone to move in, plug in a phone and away they go. It was one of those "who are you and why are you talking on my line?" "who are you and why are YOU talking on MY line?" conversations. Phone co said "well you never told us to shut off the rental connection" "yes I did" "well we just forgot".

17. Are you using Internet Explorer? You might not have the add-on...

...that you need to see Chinese characters. I'm using FireFox 1.5 with all the suggested upgrades.

If you are using IE 6.x, run Windows Update and then try again.

I found another small bug in the Spell Checker too, It doesn't check or find mis-spelled words that are up against ... (three dots). I'm a terrible speller, so I have to remember to put a space between words I'm not sure of and the ...s before checking them.

34. i reinstalled from win2k disk

and it appears to be traditional chinese, and as others have said i could just be gibberish.
there's still some characters there that are not translating (a few star symbols, boxes, ??'s) but the rest are ones i've encountered before.

going to look at it tomorrow, and hack at it to see if anything is literal.

and on another note, have been noticing lately that my firewall is alerting on a regualar basis that sites in China are scanning my computer ports (reports them as 'minor', blocking them i hope) and for whatever reason, seeing this doesn't suprise me. Still interesting all the same.
