I Can't stop...I'm balling like a baby
Doug Soderstrom, Ph.D.

quote.....
Due to a craze of events around the world, the United States may find it necessary to reinstate the draft; that is, the U.S. government might be forced into telling our nation's youth that they have no choice but to honor the call of Uncle Sam, don a military uniform, and go to war.

snip.......

The 1960's protest of the Viet Nam War showed that nothing will destroy a government faster than that of forcing young people to fight a war the people back home do not support. However, if such a thing occurs once again, it will make the Viet Nam era's protests look like mere child's play. In the 1960's it was just the hippies, the liberals, and college-age folks who were against the war. However, this time it will be mainstream America, the parents of our own children, who will be in the streets protesting; Cindy Sheehan multiplied by as many parents as it takes to bring down a government utterly dominated by a cohort of Bush-Cheney crazies, fundamentalist sympathizers, and corporate-stained politicians.

But what about the kids? What advice might one give to young people who may well be forced to make such a horrid decision; one of fighting in a war they do not believe, five years in prison, or perhaps even compelled to leave the country of their birth.. the kind of burden no self-respecting country would place upon its children
end quote.........

Please read........

2. If the current dipwad administration does reinstate the draft...
They WILL regret it and they WILL pay the price in loss of support among the majority of Americans for a long time......

Just my humble opinion.....

29. relax, sweetie. the arm chair warriors like my retarded Uncle Vern
would never allow their spawn to go to war. The hatred of the draft is in the DNA of the baby boom. Count on it. If they can't meet quotas on volunteers, how many people are going to go against their will? It will be the end of the repug party.

to go all spelling-crazy on you here, but I'd suggest changing that to bawling, because balling kinda makes a, shall we say, different impression than the one I think you're going for.

30. The spelling here is much better than on FR.
But it's obviously not a top priority for some, even here. "Balling like a baby"? Sheesh.

8. I hope they keep a roster on how many GOP kids sign up
There won't be many. I also think this is increasingly known. The republicans start wars but won't fight them or send their kids to fight them.

No, if the GOP warmongers institute a draft, it will be one that is riddled with exemptions for those in college, those with a family, or like Cheney who said he "had other priorities"

12. the nuclear facilities excuse is just that -- an excuse . . .
the real reason BushCo needs to attack Iran is the Iranian oil bourse that's scheduled to begin operation next month (I believe around March 20) . . . if oil can be traded in something other than dollars (e.g. euros), the dollar and the U.S. economy could go straight into the toilet much quicker than BushCo would like . . .

13. I, for one, am in favor of a draft
I was drafted in 1961 for two years in the US Army. I believe in a draft and not in an all volunteer army. Having conscripts in the military makes the corps elgalitarian. I believe everyone from students to workers etc. should serve out country. But, not now, not with these maniacs in charge. If there was a conscripted army before this Iraq debacle I believe there would already have been marching in the streets to end this illegal regime and illegal war. The reason there were such great demonstrations in the sixties was precisely because there was a draft.

A free nation needs an army of citizens to protect it from REAL threats, real dangers. An all volunteer army is loyal to the executive to a fault.

My opinion.

16. Yep. Male, female, gay, straight, ... EVERYONE.
Short of a Universal National Service Obligation where everyone serves 2-5 years in some form of National Service (e.g. military, public health service, VISTA, Peace Corps), the draft should be all-inclusive eligibility - no exceptions.

14. The Brainwashed Masses Will Enlist & Die For Lies
it's part of the marketing plan of invasion. Life doesn't matter to these people who've used the greatest propaganda network ever created to sell WMD lies, torture, rigged elections, spying on their own citizens and outing CIA agents.

The key to selling the lie is to blame a horrific attack on Iran. Once the propagandists, the politicos and their numerous crony organizations are convinced that a certain type of attack can be sold to the American public, it'll happen.

You want to cry about something, cry about the people who spend 24/7 planning this crap and then cry about the 99.9% of our population that is so dumbed-down they can't even comprehend it.

17. Don't cry for them.
Cry for the people that are going to be taken from this world to be used as an excuse for killing other innocent people.

The sheeple, either those who were "just following orders" or those who were just following, deserve what they'll get--either at the Hague or in the afterlife.

15. If they are actually stupid enough to take this step, I am sure that
Edited on Tue Feb-21-06 02:17 AM by GetTheRightVote
other parents have already prepared their children for such an insane request, just say NO, I will not throw my life away on * lies or his desires to beat up on Iran. No blood from my family will strain foreign soil. The crimes of this nation and it's Adminstration will come to roost with the impeachments of many of it's members and my children and their children will be standing with their picket signs right here on their native soil.

I am sick of being beat up by the elected members of our society while they and theirs sit in their warm homes here at home. I swear if they try to be so stupid as to enact a draft with a negative polling on the war in Iraq that this nation will be rocked by the actions of parents, like myself, who will refuse to lose their children to a packet of lies no matter who may deliver them. To many American children are gone with their parents only left with unanswered tears by an insincere government which, they could not possibly think for one moment we, the American public, would put up with them killing any more of them, our sons and daughters.

They would not dare to attempt such stupidity but I am ready if they dare with so much passion that I will tear the street up brick by brick until I reach the halls of Congress, and then I will want to take it down brick by brick, in words and deeds as any free American has the right to do.

It's easy for you to say "rejoice" if you don't have any sons who could get caught up in this. I have 4 sons, all draft age whose entire lives could be ruined if this should happen. I hardly consider it a time to fucking rejoice.

congress. They want their power as much as Bush. My husband did 22 years in the Marines flying helos after graduating from the Naval Academy in 78. Doubt the draft will happen. I had huge worries about this over the past three years, but no longer do. Doesn't mean I am not concerned, my 17 year old diabetic son has many friends who I also care about, as well as my 22 year old son. Just don't think it will get that far.One of the biggest reasons Bush can keep the troops in Iraq is the public in large part has little at stake in this. Threaten to draft their kids and the wild ride begins.

Edited on Tue Feb-21-06 02:55 AM by MnFats
...
In the 1960's it was just the hippies, the liberals, and college-age folks who were against the war.
That's simply untrue.
those three groups couldn't have gotten anywhere without mainstream America's growing opposition to the war.
Vietnam veterans groups, unions, the civil rights movement and middle of the road people got involved.
It was a mighty, righteous movement....
the idea that only wild-eyed bomb-throwing hippies and college leftists opposed the war is a lie promulgated by the right....

22. I was thinking the same thing...
...although I really don't remember unions as being too active against the war. In fact, when one thinks "unions" and "Vietnam war protests," one is far more likely to recall images of a mob of "patriotic" Teamster "hardhats" beating up peaceful anti-war protesters at a NYC march...and being praised by Nixon for doing so.

23. actually, the Nixon administration set that up....
it's true the unions were split and probably more supported than opposed the war, though some unions became vocal opponents.

there are supposed to be tapes of Haldeman and Nixon planning for the 'union members' some of whom were just thugs, to kick ass on the protesters in NYC.

24. Draft = the self destruct button
Edited on Tue Feb-21-06 03:35 AM by Freedom_Aflaim
If we know anything we know that Rove is a pretty insidious schemer.

but he's not stupid.

Instituting the draft is the Whitehouse self destruct button. The moment they announce a draft is the moment that they lose any power they have. Bush's own base will be screaming impeachment.

Frankly, the only calls that I see for a draft are from members of the Democratic party (at least they say they are). Some folks have this crazy idea that if we send a bunch of unwilling folks off to die and kill, that we'll prove that dying and killing is a bad thing.
