Randi Rhodes was talking about the movie "Network" yesterday
Edited on Tue Feb-21-06 12:57 PM by ginnyinWI
She was saying how they were talking about selling out to the Arab nations even in the 70s. She said everyone should see this movie!

Well I checked, and it is going to be on TCM (Turner Classic Movies) this Saturday night (early Sunday, actually) at 2:15 a.m. Eastern.
edit: sorry I screwed up the time: It will be on at 4:15 Eastern, 3:15 Central.

Anyone who hasn't seen it might enjoy seeing how fiction can become reality.

1. I'm sure this is the part she was referring to:
You have meddled with the primal forces of nature, Mr. Beale, and I won't have it!! Is that clear?! You think you've merely stopped a business deal. That is not the case. The Arabs have taken billions of dollars out of this country, and now they must put it back! It is ebb and flow, tidal gravity! It is ecological balance!

You are an old man who thinks in terms of nations and peoples. There are no nations. There are no peoples. There are no Russians. There are no Arabs. There are no third worlds. There is no West. There is only one holistic system of systems, one vast and immane, interwoven, interacting, multivariate, multi-national dominion of dollars. Petro-dollars, electro-dollars, multi-dollars, Reichmarks, rins, rubles, pounds, and shekels.

It is the international system of currency which determines the totality of life on this planet. That is the natural order of things today. That is the atomic and subatomic and galactic structure of things today! And YOU have meddled with the primal forces of nature, and YOU WILL ATONE!

Am I getting through to you, Mr. Beale?

3. From the same era, I'd recommend this one, too

http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0073802/

Higgins: It's simple economics. Today it's oil, right? In ten or fifteen years, food. Plutonium. Maybe even sooner. Now, what do you think the people are gonna want us to do then?

Joe Turner: Ask them?

Higgins: Not now - then! Ask 'em when they're running out. Ask 'em when there's no heat in their homes and they're cold. Ask 'em when their engines stop. Ask 'em when people who have never known hunger start going hungry. You wanna know something? They won't want us to ask 'em. They'll just want us to get it for 'em!

4. An important point in the movie
Is that the network's owners was more concerned about programming pushing it's pro-corporate political agenda than the ratings.

6. Great movie
Only I believe the first newsman to die on live TV will be a weatherman covering a storm.

7. Does TCM play commercials during movies?
AMC went to hell when they started doing that (long ago).

8. no, I think they are still commercial-free
I agree about AMC by the way--never go there any more. The quality of movies has gone way down, too. :(

9. No and they do not edit either
If a movie has strong content they run it late at night as they are doing with this.

Every once in a while they will get stuck with an old print that has a word or two, usually mild blasphemies editied out but they do their best to not air editied movies.

11. They don't colorize any more.
They did at first, but got a lot of flack for it. So most of what you see is the original film - sometimes with cut footage added back in.

And no commercials.

One of the few reasons for having cable.
