Depending on how you look at it. On the one hand, DU has been swinging the collective-guilt bat the past couple of days in a way that hardly makes me comfortable (witness the number of threads talking about "the Arabs"). That ain't cool, and I don't have a problem with anyone bringing attention to the fact that people are doing it.

On the other hand, he's right in that all Arabs probably have "ties" to terrorists. I'm fairly sure all Americans, Thais, Italians and Argentinians do as well. The problem with terms like "ties to" or "linked with" is that they are so unbelievably vague that they can mean anything.

Look at me. I'm a recent university graduate in a city that has several major regional colleges in its borders. Most of them, as is typical for colleges, are pretty politically active to put it lightly. Also typically for colleges, each of them have at least some way-off-in-la-la-land, whacktivist types who make TimeCube look like a paragon of logic and common sense, either in the harmless-but-insane sense or in the let's-support-the-nuking-of-(group) sense. Some of them were my classmates, a few of them I considered friends. (A few I didn't, but I at least associated with - there's another linking phrase - them even though my natural urge was to hurl large, heavy objects.)

Does this mean I'm "linked to" or "have ties to" whatever causes they're supporting, even if I don't know it? Hell yes, it does.

Could some of the causes these guys support be somewhere between questionable and openly violent? Of course it does, one or two of them were pretty clear about that at points.

Does it mean that those links or ties are at all relevant to anything? Hell no, it doesn't, at least in the overwhelming majority of situations.

It's way too easy to throw those kinds of terms around, and a lot of people do it without thinking nearly as much as they ought to. I got the impression that the original poster wasn't saying it in an "OMGARABSBAD!!!1!111!eleven" sense as much as he was highlighting a silly, silly argument which has unfortunately overshadowed more specific, far more legitimate, complaints.
