13. I say mid-30s
This is another issue - like Katrina, which Republicans will turn on him over. For Bush to fall significantly under 40% - he has to begin losing his base of hard-core republicans (which make up 38% of the population).

My parents vehemently disagree with Bush on this one, but they still can't bring themselves to say they disapprove of him. I expect the same of many Freepers.

7. At least 13% will adore W even if he spawned the devil's child
Another 20% will vote R regardless of facts.

So about 33% is my prediction.

24. But the point is, does it matter?
The lower Bush falls in the polls, the more he digs in his heels and thumbs his nose at the American people. No respect for us, for Congress, for the Constitution, for our troops, for our poor, our hungry, our jobless, for the homeless in NOLA, no respect for our right to privacy, for the rule of law, for freedom of the press -- NADA, NOTHING, ZILCH.

Bush's numbers could be in the single digits and he'd respond by doing something even more outrageous. With every passing day he increasingly morphs into the kind of petulant, sadistic despot even Nero might envy. Resistance only emboldens his resentment and spiteful fits of revenge. I only fear that Bush will respond to falling poll numbers by launching yet another war! Bloody tantrums on a global scale. After all, this ignorant and sociopathic meglomaniac believes he is the divine messenger and certainly not answerable to us mere mortals.

29. Nixonian
Blood is in the water, cue the long delayed feeding frenzy.

People no longer LIKE Bush even if they might support items from the menu that is his agenda.

Taking a bite out of Bush on any issue now carries less risk of hurtful e-mails and whatever else was muting the watchdogs of executive excess and mismanagement.

It will be a giddy feeding frenzy.

Everytime I see a post like yours (which you certainly have every right to make) I always hear, in the back of my mind 'What difference could it possibly make? Bush already IS the president--and he can't run again--so what's the fascination with his approval rating?'

It sure doesn't bother HIM...

31. The Mandate factor
Yeah, it's overrated but congress critters do have an understandable tendency to defer more to a popular president.

And the media uses the numbers to justify giving more or less air time to presidential critics.

40. In the range of 28 to 34.
It would be a huge blow for him to go under 30. But all that he's basically got right now is his base, the ultra-conservative 30%, plus the roughly 5 to 10% that will rubberstamp him due to "protecting America." He's going to lose big chunks of both with this thing unless he comes out tomorrow morning and does a complete 180 degree flip flop. It'll take more time for his numbers to go lower than that, because this base he's got is extremely resistant to change, but he's doing his best to fuck it up.

42. After 5 years of Dubya, Dick, Don, and Kindasleazy bellowing about
imminent terror attacks, demanding billions to pay for "the war on terror," and lying about WMDs, I think even thick-headed red voters will begin to accept the fact that their beloved president is dumber than bag of hammers.

I haven't ruled out the possibility that many of those voters are dumber than he is, but I try not to think about it.

Approval ratings drop for Bush to 34%. Cheney holding at 28-29%. Support for the Iraq occupation falls another couple points. This presidency is over.

And several purple-district GOP Congresscritters decide not to seek re-election.
