The new blond: Fox lips.



Blond hair may have already passed as a sexual signifier on news networks. The new blond is lips, specifically what people inside the industry call "Fox lips," and they are worn by Fox's Laurie Dhue, Fox's Gretchen Carlson, and MSNBC's Rita Cosby, three top blondes. Achieved in the makeup room in a procedure that sounds one step this side of cosmetic surgery, I'm told that powder, pencil, and paint can turn even the weakest mouth into a juicy vagina dentata.

How big are Fox lips? When Rita Cosby switched from Fox to MSNBC, a construction crane was called in to move hers, which resemble a pair of oily, red eels mating angrily.

19. ONCE --- in the movies about twenty-plus years ago...

...and as first dates go, it was a real disaster. I'd never been to a "Rocky Horror" midnight show before, and didn't think to bring a single prop. Later, my date pitched a MAJOR hissy-fit about "SOME PEOPLE!" when she got thumped with a roll of toilet paper.

We never saw each other again after that.

In later years, the kids watched a few minutes (somewhat edited) on basic cable, and they almost bust a gut when I pointed out that Tim Curry was also the voice of "Nigel Thornberry".

And DEVO went on to score music for the Rugrats.

My theory is that lipstick imitates the natural redness of sexual flush/blushing, but I have no proof. If you can't fake the puffiness/engorgement, you can at least fake the color. But this doesn't account for the pale pink fads in lipstick -- except when very pale lipstick is fashionable, it's usually accompanied by dark eye make-up (compensating).

Lipstick was used by Parisian courtesans to make a visible ring around a man's 'member' as a mark of (cough) distinction. In the liberal/libertine mode of the day, it was soon that all the high-born ladies of the court adopted this fashion. Henceforth, lipstick (and exaggeration) became a fashion mainstay.
