Taser Hopes To Release Product In 2007

POSTED: 9:02 am PST February 22, 2006

PHOENIX -- The nation's largest stun-gun manufacturer is working on a new way to deliver electricity to the human body: through 12-gauge shotgun shells.

Though it's still being developed, Taser International Inc. says the new product will allow police officers and U.S. troops to hit someone from a much greater distance than its current line of Taser guns, which Amnesty International has cited in more than 120 deaths.

The eXtended Range Electro-Muscular Projectile, or XREP, will be a shotgun shell designed to combine the blunt-force trauma of a fast-moving baseball with the electrical current of a stun gun.

snip...
But the weapons, considered by the company to be low-level-force devices, can hit a target only about 25 feet away.

Test models of the XREP shells currently reach 100 feet, though the military has challenged the company to extend the range to 330 feet, the company said.

2. Are we meant to take this as bad? or Good? Or just cool?
People do tend to get upset at the very concept of weapon development around here - even when said weapon are non-lethels.

16. as opposed to "more-than-lethal"
where the weapon not only kills you, but burns your house down, kills your family, and ruins your reputation.

22. I think most departments use the term "less lethal"
recognizing that electric stun weapons can still be lethal, just in a much smaller percentage of uses.

A lot of the problem with the Tazer isn't the device itself, it's poor training that leads some officers to use them as compliance tools rather than as alternatives to shooting someone.

5. Far better to just give police one option,
namely the deadly option. :sarcasm:

Improving the effectiveness and range of non-lethal weaponry available to the police will reduce the number of people they shoot to death.

It's baffling to me that anyone thinks that this is a bad thing.

12. But they are not "non-lethal."
People get killed by Tasers. Now alleged criminals will get hit with them from farther away, making cops more likely to use them. More cops using them mean more people will die without the benefit of a trial.

17. "Non-lethal" weapons are too readily used.
Lethal is supposed to mean ya use it as a LAST resort, not a first resort.

Too often, cops are using so-called "non-lethal" weapons as a first resort ("it's "non-lethal" so why should I risk any inujury or backtalk, just zap first and question later")...and too many people get maimed or killed.

19. Bullseye, Lynn
Police are less likely to shoot first and ask questions later with a gun than they are a Taser. And they are more likely to give a few extra jolts of electricity than they are a few extra bullets. That's what happens when police get the mindset of Taser's being "non-lethal."
