The shock came like a woman who walks in on her husband having sex with her best friend. Sure the signs had been there for a long time--the lipstick on the collar, the strange numbers on the cell phone, the warnings from mutual friends who seemed like maybe they just had some other agenda. But at that very moment when she walked in on them, she knew that there was no more denying it: her husband was playing her for all she's worth.
Segue to GWB 2006, PortGate. For 6 long years, the Freepers have united around Heir Chimp like he was their savior, never questioning his decisions which were always made in the interest of National Security and righteously accusing those who did question him as being traitors. They handed over their Civil Rights, dismissed as politicking the Scooter Libby Scandal, cried "details, schmeetails" about the false case for war, and opened their hearts and wallets to Halliburton, despite their conservative leanings. Sure, there were some worries and a few WTF?'s that went along with these sacrifices, but, hey, the pResident knows how to keep us safe.
Except that... one day, the pResident actually brought home his mistress.
Now, there was no longer any denying who his primary allegiance was with. You can't be married to National Security and be in bed with the UAE who were partners in the most tragic crime of our lives. If this is so, then maybe you really are the whore they all said you were.
Freeper, Scorned Woman--it's all the same. You feel violated because he broke The Promise upon which your whole relationship was built. He betrayed the trust you so blindly and generously gave in the face of doubters. And what makes it even worse is who he chose to bed down with. What a slap in the face for all the support you gave. So now, you're done with him. It's the final straw 'cause who knows what else he might sell out on?
To this poster, the Port deal is the opening that alot of Freepers and FenceRiders have been subconsciously looking for. Well, their ship has just sailed into port. This is an event that united many of them in their shock and guttural objection, and it's their only safe opportunity to express their percolating frustration with the pResident's questionable, irresponsible policy. To make a break like this on their own might have opened them up to the kind of scathing name-calling and blackballing that they were used to dishing out. But being able to diss the pRez under the premise of National Security is a way to save some face. This, no doubt, is the Chimp's biggest political hit yet.
But the question remains: If the pResident is willing to sacrifice his agenda and battle-cry of National Security to the the highest bidder, and is also willing to sacrifice the dwindling remainder of his own political capital and credibility (and that of his party in general), yet is still standing behind his decision in the face of angry, universal backlash,
...then what else is part of this deal that would make all that worth it?
