I just now, while driving home, had my local RW talk radio station on in the car. (No AAR affiliate, and I'm too cheap for XM or Sirius.)

Sean (Fred Flintstone-Head) Hannity had Ken (it's raining men) Mehlman on his show, and Sean was actually grilling him about the Dubai port deal. Kenny was trying to spin it as a no big deal thing, and Hannity was actually pressing him on it!

Hannity: "Does the UAE recognize Israel?"
Mehlman: "No, and bla bla deplorable-cakes bla bla that being said, bla bla bla Ally-in-the-war-on-terror-cakes, bla bla."
Hannity: "But doesn't the fact that the government doesn't recognize Israel indicate that the Islamic extremists have some influence over the Government?"
Mehlman: "Blather blather blather Ally-in-the-war-on-terror-cakes"
Hannity: "But this is a government-owned corporation, and the government is beholden to Islamic extremists"
Mehlman: "Yada yada not government owned like AMTRACK!!! But a public-private partnership yada yada bla bla"
Hannity: "I have to take issue with that - it IS government owned! And it's a government that doesn't recognize Israel."

I nearly drove off the road.

Now don't get me wrong - Sean Hannity is now and forever shall be a complete and utter asshat in my book. But to hear him actually disagreeing publicly with Kenny-boy Mehlman indicates that this issue has the potential to absolutely fracture the Republican Party. The Freepy-headed Hannitoids must be lighting up his phone lines and his e-mail to get him to split with the wishes of his Corporate Christofascist masters so publicly.

Brought a smile to my lips and a tear of joy to my eye just imagining the possibilities.

Additionally, Americans have been conditioned that anything "tied to" anything even vaguely Arabic, is nothing but a front for terrorism. Now, Bush is giving the keys to our ports to the Arabs.

Yes, this is an utterly simplistic and naive look at the situation, but this viewpoint is available all around us in abundance. Hell, as Americans we're pros at this, and you can usually find it reflected in our media - like when Rocky fights the Russkies, or in Back to Future, when the evil Libyans want to get a nuclear weapon! Can you imagine at the height of American anti-Russian fever, when Rocky fights the evil Russian, and we were bogged down in a war with some breakaway republic, the President decided to sell our port security to the Russians? The reaction would be the same.

We've been conditioned that Arabs are bad, and now we're gonna let Arabs run our ports. Simplistic and a bit racist, sure, but that's the spin, and I can't believe BushCo wouldn't assume this would piss off a lot of people.

20. I Do Not See Arabs As Evil

I mean, I'm hearing that Frist and some republicans are fighting the port deal, and issuing statements about it, but Democratic opposition has not gotten any press attention. I bet they're setting it up to look like the republicans are keeping our ports safe, while distancing themselves from the Bush Administration.

Either that, or Bush is deliberately throwing this moribund deal out there so that it will look like not ALL republicans in Washington are ALWAYS behind the prez. "See? Sometimes we disagree with him!" As if ANYBODY in their right fucking MIND could think selling our ports to the UAE is a good idea. IT's like those classic "babies need food!" platforms Chris Rock talks about.

I can't remember what he said this morning, but it was about the port situation, and it was definitely negative on Bush. Last week, he made a snide comment about spending hundreds on billions on rebuilding Iraq and relatively little on New Orleans.
