Cheney and friends shoot 417 pheasants on "canned hunt"

"Upon his (Cheney's) arrival at the exclusive Rolling Rock Club in Ligonier Township, gamekeepers released 500 pen-raised pheasants from nets for the benefit of him and his party. In a blaze of gunfire, the group—which included legendary Dallas Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach and U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX), along with major fundraisers for Republican candidates—killed at least 417 of the birds. According to one gamekeeper who spoke to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Cheney was credited with shooting more than 70 of the pen-reared fowl."

I'm a hunter myself, but shooting birds in a barrel is not my idea of any kind of sport. And taking hundreds of birds in one day is just sick . . .

1. Ya, Dick that's real fair.
Why doesn't he go bald eagle hunting to see how that would play in the press.

Good Lord, Cheney is a totally useless excuse for a human being...

utterly dissolute, debased to the lowest level of humanity, Bob Hope joking he restored Christianity to have someone to feed to lions.
Just wait till you hear of the "Safari Club" (if you already haven't).

12. Isn't that normal for this administration?
I am not really surprised since the current administration enjoys killing helpless people over in Iraq. Here in the USA they didn't mind watching thousands of people pleading for help from roof tops in the aftermath of Katrina. Hell, this is just par for the course for them. I guess that if an old attorney gets killed while the VP is shooting at some tame birds it's considered collateral damage.

Come on liberals, get a grip... if you want to enjoy your hunting experience it's obvious that you take an old lawyer along as target practice and get snot flinging drunk right befor the sun goes down and then try to hide out for as long as possible... What's the big f-ing deal?

and all the other stuff you do to the bodies in order to eat them? Can't imagine the veep and the senators do what real hunters do after their kill.

I can only imagine how many hired hands are at these "killing fields" to pick up the kill

I hope one of them chokes on a bone one of these days.

62. Whatever the truth may be, he's called "a good shot" because he's
being propagandized as an archetypal, symbolic figure, The Hunter, a stern, intimidating, figure who protects and provides for the weak. The strong, silent, get-it-done, don't-mess-with-me Marborough Man. It's deliberate. No kidding! This is propaganda and PR framing. Who knows or cares whether he is actually "a good shot."

Here are two threads that touch on the "archetype" issue, which also explains why Cheney was weakened more than one might think by the episode. He's so obviously NOT what he is portrayed to be:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=364x464667
thread title (2-19-06 GD): Jane Hamsher Explains the WIDER IMPORTANCE of the Cheney Shooting Story
Comment/excerpt: Very insightful analysis by Jane Hamsher of firedoglake. As Jane sees it, Fuddgate has weakened Cheney, and this has in turn lessened his clout in strong-arming Congressional members into toeing his line., at least for now. One major issue impacted by this, Jane believes, is the status of NSA investigation.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=364x467252
thread title (2-19-06 GD): Why Cheney's hunting accident matters - By Stan Goff
Comment/excerpt: He perceives the way ARCHETYPES deliberately concocted by propaganda have been damaged by Fuddgate. Excerpt: “…This is the age of postmodern politics – the age of impression management. This is the time when the narrative is used to trump reality. No doubt perfidy has always characterized politics, but the good old days of no-bullshit thuggery and patrician patronage has given way to the construction of puerile caricatures. And many thought that Bush was the mediocre narcissist who liked to dress up in flight suits and caper across the decks of aircraft carriers. This incident exposes Cheney himself as just another costumed buffoon, and not the Darth Vader figure he and his desperately insecure admirers seemed to relish. … Dick Cheney has constructed himself as a hunter…consistent with his supposedly intimidating predator image. These are hegemonic masculinities, but only in the most theatrical sense. The cowboy and the hunter are idealized archetypes from a mythical past.

And here's a link to COMPILATION THREADS on the Cheney shooting/Fuddgate, one in the GD forum for discussion and one in the Research Forum for easy long-term updating. The video threads are organized at the end of the list:

thread title (2-0-06 GD): There's something wrong w/ Cheney -- killed 70 TAME birds in one trip
Comment/excerpt: The poster notes “In one incident that received some press coverage, Cheney and his pals had 500 farm raised pheasants -- that is, birds that had lost their fear of people -- released before them. The party killed 417 birds in one day, with Cheney bagging 70 of the tamed animals himself. This is not hunting. This is slaughter. This represents the same mental illness that caused W to kill small animals as a child. Isn't wanton killing of small animals by children a sign of mental illness and a marker for violent criminal behavior in the adult?”
