If she chooses to go into science, there's a glut of science PhD's out there.

In the biological sciences, she will have to get a PhD and spend 4-5 years at a postdoc before she can make a decent salary. So she needs to be aware that at minimum a science career will involve 4 years for a BS, 5 years minimum for the PhD (many people skip the MS now), and 4-5 years on a postdoc. Then she will have to spend her first 5 years scrabbling for tenure, which means tons of grant writing and kissing up.

Because of federal and state cutbacks, more universities are emphasizing indirect costs, which makes research almost exclusively grant-driven. This means that if she decides to go into science, when she gets to the apex of the career ladder - a university professorship - she will spend a lot more time doing fund-raising for the lab than doing research herself.

If she works in industry, she'll do research, but she will be under some 25-year-old corporate pissant's thumb who thinks that an MBA enables him/her to dictate the pace at which research proceeds. I transferred out of a Phd program myself to teach, and I've been told since that it was a great move because it's a terrible time to be a research scientist.

Cheap labor is the rule, and when the Chinese wages rise, jobs are moved to cheaper parts of China, or to other countries (Vietnam, etc.) that have even cheaper labor.

over the last few decades they went from a largely agricultural society to a densely populated urban manufacturing supergiant. Urban areas are good for reducing the overall personal transportation costs. Imagine how fast the oil would be depleted if all of China decided to drive. :crazy:

Even though the entire population of the US is just a rounding error to the Chinese, it's not normal for one country to dominate so much of our manufacturing. It's not safe. What happens if we need essential goods and they stop selling to us? It will shock us silly. God forbid we ever go to war with them. We won't, but what if Bush does something really stupid? Even Clinton had the good sense to back down. Taiwan just isn't worth saving.

Think about jobs in China moving to cheaper areas, then remember that China has 1.3 billion people...maybe...
