Strange political fault lines in the UAE port controversy
It doesn't seem to have much to do with left vs. right or progressive vs. reactionary.

We have leftists and progressives adopting the Bush fear meme: Security! Security! Security!

We have rightists and reactionaries talking about our Arab brothers.

Where is the fault line here?

Is it internationalists vs. nativists?

1. Personally I think this is about politics!
I don't necessarily expect a terror strike from this. It points out the hypocrisy and double standard of this guy. Its all about money. And people are seeing that now. Bout time...

2. Don't know where to post this but
is this a reputable site? If this is true, why haven't we heard more about it? This just gets more confusing as new information is passed on to the public. Can anyone here shade some light on the subject?

if you read post #14 (also mine) you can see that I have no answers. I am just hoping that someone here at DU could point me in the right direction or at least find some answers.

Edited to add: Feel free to use it to start a thread. I am too new to start a thread.

3. most of us who don't want UAE, think the U.S. should run its own ports
At least that is the impression I get.

4. Indeed
On the one side: corporatists, Bushbots and a small number of liberals.

On the other: Bush haters, most liberals, paleoconservatives and libertarians.

5. It may also be along class lines
because the working class is fed up with the offshoring of US jobs and this may be one egregious example too many.

8. Democrats would be wise to capitalize
On the corporate and wealthy elite assault on most Americans, and the selling off of the United States of America to benefit the wealthy elite and mega corporations.

I do not give a damn about how Democrats are not suppose to engage in a class war. The majority of Americans have been getting their lives destroyed by a very real class war, in which they do not have any representation, because Democrats are not suppose to bring the issue up.

6. Yes, where is the outrage and where is the media
Government of Saudi Arabia, Saudi individuals and establishments

Head Office Riyadh, KSA

The National Shipping Company of Saudi Arabia (NSCSA) was established in 1979 to meet the transportation needs of Importers and Exporters in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and other countries in the Middle East.

And look at the ports where they control berths:

Marine Terminals

Baltimore, MD

Halifax, Canada

Newport News, VA

Houston, TX

New Orleans, LA

St. John, Canada

Houston, Texas

Savannah, GA

Wilmington, NC

Port Newark, NJ

Brooklyn, NY

Where’s the outrage?

11. So, from your link, it seems that this Saudi shipping co owns some of P&O
Port terminals. Is it the same P&O that is involved inthe current sale to Dubai? Am I following this correctly? It is confusing.

14. That is what
I was trying to find out. The more I read and learn the more confused I get. Wish I could have been of more help to you. Why isn't the media shedding any light on the fact that ports have been controlled by a foreign country since 1979? I am hoping someone here at DU could point me in the right direction.

9. It's all about FREEDOM LOVING PEOPLES, IMO
Explain this to me, someone!!!

Saddam, a despot = BAD.

Freedom for freedom-loving Iraqi Peoples, by the barrel of a gun = GOOD.

No elections or political parties in the UAE = GOOD?????

Seven despots as absolute rulers of the UAE who own everything = GOOD?????

Sumpin' STANKS here.....!!!!!
Can ya smell it??????

10. I tend to get very uncomfortable agreeing with Bush on anything.
Or David Brooks, for that matter, who I usually find to be an arrogant ass, but who I agree with on the port issue. To my view, the security concerns just seem way overblown.

On the other hand, DUers who are raising cain about this find themselves walking hand in hand with a lot of Freepers.

It sure is nice to see the Bush presidency take an additional battering, but I wonder how much we really gain by playing the scary Arab bogey man card and pandering to fear.

18. The United Arab Emirites runs the company that will have control of the
Ops in 9 Ports. If that doesn't bother you that our shores are no longer in our own American hands then I assume you are a Globalist and for the United Nations and World Monetary Fund and World Courts running America?
Now, the International Court (if America belonged to it) would have already prosecuted Bush/Cheney for War Crimes, but it seems Bush likes to "pick and choose" what Globalization we participate in.

12. Globalism, Corporatism vs American Freedom.
If you lived abroad, you'd understand where they're going. 10% of the population owns 90% of the resources in every other country.

13. The fault line is: people who love their country vs people who love money
and/or Bush more than they love their country

The LOVE of money is the root of all evil.

19. Free Trade vs Fair Trade,
Edited on Sun Feb-26-06 07:54 PM by johnaries
There are a lot of people on both sides who believe in Free Trade without any tariffs and minimal regulation. The same folks who supported NAFTA also seem to support the deal. With perhaps the exception of Hillary.

Edit to add: just my impression. I don't have anything to back it up with.
