KINGS REX AND ZULU HAVE TAKEN CONTROL OF NEW ORLEANS
and they have ordered partying and revelry for the next 30 hours. The weather is incredible.

For those who think Mardi Gras should not have gone forward, please write a check for at least 150 million dollars to the city. That is the low ball estimated economic impact this year's Mardi Gras season will provide to the city (below the normal but nothing to miss a throw about.)

12. Not to be a spelling/grammar Nazi
but it's "Laissez les bons temps rouler!" "Let the good times roll!" "Rouler" needs to be in the infinitive form.

That is all.

Laissez les bons temps rouler!!

13. It would've been $150,002,000
if I hadn't wussed out. Shame on me. :spank:

Thank you, sir, may I have another? :spank:

It's not even like anything's going on here at work. And the "Mardi Gras" on Nu'uanu Ave. tomorrow is threatened by all that rain you're not getting. :eyes:

Then again, when (not if) I do get back in, the absence of all that Carnival craziness will prove beneficial to my real purpose: to connect with all you fine folks both new and old (mostly new, as I am only still in touch with a couple of people from the old days; it was that long ago!) and make sure we have the city ready for Mardi Gras, and Jazz Fest, and maybe the Dem convention, and everything else for generations to come. If you look very closely, you may just possibly be able to see my (real) name on one of the books or signs unveiled Sat. at a neighborhood "viability fair":

It's not much, but it's a start... throw me somethin' mister!

15. All that smacking around in your post
gets me in the party mood. I'd be the guy smiling.

In a macabre happy note. They'll be partying at Mardi Gras long after all of us are gone, fuck a bunch of hurricanes. Keep them good times rolling.

Everyone needs some fun and it's a great way to lift people's spirits and bring in some money to help the city. Two things done at once! And I think everybody is always up for a party!

DH and I can't wait to see New Orleans again, because we both know what it's like to miss her.

There's some coffee and beignets at Cafe du Monde with our name on 'em, and we'll be eating King Cake tonight from Randazzo's and toasting the revelers. Have a ball, and throw me somethin', Mister!

20. The money was not the reason many of us wanted the parades

the parades, mind you, not Mardi Gras either greatly scaled back or canceled. It is the perception and what is appropriate. The perception now to the rest of the country is "oh they are partying and living it up down there, no need for me to send a check to CC or the United Way," while 75% of the current donations have been spent and FEMA is pretty much pulling their money up. The appropriateness is well, there still aren't trailers for most people to live in in front of their destroyed houses in Orleans Parish, but lets have a parade! And to think there were those who were pushing this and as one guy said on one of the cable news channels "working day and night on it since October," gee thanks, that was really what the city needed from you in October.

36. What a paradox.
A city in ruin.

A once vibrant city of over 600,000 people, reduced to 200,000, with estimates that more are going to leave.

A party to help heal itself? Possibly.

Badly needed money coming in from the Mardis Gras? No doubt.

But if my brother died, suddenly and unexpextedly, would I still feel like throwing a party for him on his next birthday?

Maybe it's too soon. Maybe a few more things need to be done, first. Maybe there needs to be a separation. Maybe more time is needed to heal.

39. Reading DU posts today
I'm here in New Orleans. I don't go to parades. I don't do Mardi Gras. But the city needs it. It's part of the identity. It's an affirmation of what makes it unique. It also bids defiance to Shrub and the lowlifes who watched it drown, who refuse to recognize that a poor, ignorant Black person is still a person. I despise the debauchery of Mardi Gras, but part of the celebration, the elaborate parades, represent the city's demand for dignity, then and now, a recognition that celebration and joy, being homo ludens (if I remember my Latin), are the levees against despair, prejudice and hatred.
