Here in Denver, I've met quite a few Katrina survivors. Quite a few have moved here, and it seems that every other week I meet a new one. Two months ago it was this young kid at Office Depot. He was applying for a job. He had been here for about a week. A month ago it was a single mother bartending downtown. She had been here for week as well. They tripled her rent in NO and she wanted to be able to afford her rent AND sending her kid to a good school (she was not happy with the public education down there). Then last night, I met a guy who has been here for a month. His buddy was visiting and he said he had decided to move up here as well and will be back in a couple of weeks.
The one constant I got from all of them...and I'll try to paraphrase all their comments into one:
"Do you know what they (the Federal Government) did for us? They gave us credit cards for $2000 and said, 'Good Luck!'"
The guy last night added, "They gave more money to the Iraqis."
And they ALL said, "How the hell am I supposed to start a new life with $2000 after I just lost everything?"
And I the guys last night I could tell were Republicans. But the key word here is "WERE".
